Utah-based
Phillip Bimstein uses the techniques of the 20th century avantgarde to compose
music that is neoclassical in nature.
Heat Beneath the Sand collects compositions for chamber quartet (oboe, English horn, violin, guitar, bass, vocals).
Garland Hirschi's Cows collects five compositions:
Garland Hirschi's Cows,
Dark Winds Rising for string quartet and tape,
The Louie Louie Variations
and In The Door for sampler.
They are all relatively lightweight, humorous, melodic, despite the fact that
some of them are totally artificial.
Bimstein also composed
the song cycle Red Rock Rondo (2005)
and the "techno tone poem" Lockdown.
Larkin Gifford's Harmonica (Starkland, 2006) contains
the three-movement opera-collage Casino (one of his artistic peaks),
the three-movement Larkin Gifford's Harmonica for reconstructed harmonica folk tunes,
The Bushy Wushy Rag for chamber ensemble and voices,
Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa for sounds of nature,
the brief Rockville Utah 1926 for string quartet.
