Virtuoso del dulcimer, Malcolm Dalglish esordì durante gli anni '70 in duo con Grey Larsen, eseguendo musica tradizionale irlandese.

Thunderhead, però, supera quelle premesse per coniare un linguaggio personale.

Dalglish è in realtà soprattutto un tecnico dello strumento, più interessato ad esplorare le sue possibilità armoniche che non a realizzare dell'arte. L'arrangiamento lo antepone a flauti, fiddle, chitarra, sempre in maniera molto fredda e professionale.

Con Pete Sutherland il duo formò anche i Metamora, un ensemble acustico che progredì dal sound ancora nostalgicamente tradizionale di composizioni come New Waltz (sul primo album) verso il folk da camera di Morning Walk (con Philip Aaberg al pianoforte), una traiettoria molto simile a quella di Darol Anger.

Jogging The Memory (Windham Hill, 1986) is a solo dulcimer album.

After a long hiatus, Pleasure (Ooolitic, 1999) introduced a completely different format, one in which a folk choir was left free to improvise over Dalglish's Celtic-inspired music.
