Nomad (Hearts Of Space, 1997) is another vast ambient soundscape with orchestral overtones. Sauvanet's haunting, mysterious and exotic aesthetics is well represented by Nomad, with percussion and guitar creating a tapestry that electronic winds simply sweep. On the other hand, the ethereal Madurai Temple is perhaps too self-indulgent. But the album's most impressive achievements are elsewhere. The 16-minute Land Of The Angel is a dilated adagio based on long mournful string melodies, reminiscent of Albinoni and Pachelbel, that segues into an "Ave Maria"-like operatic aria. A romantic saxophone, soon joined by wind and string instruments, sets the leitmotiv for the symphonic piece Bolero Excelcis, a carefully arranged and structured composition. |
