Can i nominate a film for future viewing?.

The idea is to watch foreign films by directors who have won prestigious international awards. If you don't know who made the film that you would like to nominate, most likely it does not qualify. If you do know her/his name, then you may first want to check her/his biography. But if you have to check her/his biography, that's another bad sign. We would prefer if you worked backwards: think of a director who has won international awards, and then nominate one of her/his best films (regardless of how popular it is among your coworkers, neighbors, etc).

Generally speaking, we are skeptic of recent films. If a film is good, it will still be good ten years from now. Given that you probably haven't seen many of the films made over the last ten years, why would you want to watch a recent film and not the dozens that you missed over the last ten years? Most likely because you are influenced not by the quality of that film but by the buzz (i.e., you may be basing your nomination on how much the local distributor spent on publicizing that film in your area).

The worst reference: "my cousin's girlfriend's coworker's housemate says that it's a good film" :-)

Films made in the USA are relatively easy to catch in movie theaters, so they are very low priority, no matter how good.

We recommend that, before nominating a film, you check NOT the marketing that the local distributor has done but the reviews published in reliable publications.

It is a bad idea to nominate a film from your home country.

You are very welcome to assign priorities to the films that have already been nominated and are listed on this page. We try to alternate nationalities, but otherwise the order is based on what is available for rental. Mostly, they are listed alphabetically.

Nominations are accepted only from people who have attended several of these evenings.
