The Unbelievable Truth
Trust (1990)
A frustrated chain-smoking employee, Matthew,
sends his company to hell because their products are terrible.
A teenage girl, Maria, who is a high-school drop-out, tells her boyfriend Anthony,
a high-class college student who is preparing for an important football game
and an examination. He doesn't not want to get stuck with such a loser and
tells her in the rudest of manners.
Matthew tells his father that he quit his job. His father thinks he is a loser.
He is an abusive father obsessed with clean bathrooms and beats Matthew when
he finds a cigarette butt on the bathroom sink.
Matthew's only consolation is a grenade that he keeps to satisfy his suicidal
impulses.
Maria's father dies of a heart attack when she tells him that she is pregnant,
and her mother coldly asks her to get out of the house.
Maria sits on a bench outside a liquor store with a melancholy
middle-aged woman who starts talking
to her. Maria tells her how she "killed" her father, and the stranger tells
Maria how her daughter died: she would be Maria's age. Then the stranger gives
Maria some money. Maria walks into the liquor store to buy beer and
she is almost raped by the store owner (who figures she is trying to buy
alcohol illegally),
and she has to burn his face with a cigarette to get away.
Outside the store a mom is screaming that someone stole her baby, and it
looks like the thief was the stranger who gave money to Maria.
She doesn't have a place to sleep. She enters Matthew's house and he lets her
stay (his father is away).
Matthew is offered a job by a friend of his father who fixes tv, but Matthew
refuses to work on tv sets on ideological grounds.
In the meantime Maria has made a mess of his home and his father gets furious
when he finds a stranger in the house and the house a mess. Maria, who was doing
her laundry, has to leave with wet clothes on. While she was doing her laundry
she saw the headlines of the newspaper about the stolen baby.
Matthew walks to the neighborhood
bar where his neuroses are obviously well known: he hits someone who insults
Van Gogh, the barman quickly turns off the tv set and Matthew hands him a tape
of classical music to play loud. A woman starts talking to him, puzzled by
his behavior. They argue briefly. Then Maria comes in: the woman is her sister
Peggy.
Maria invites Matthew to leave his psychotic father and move in with them.
Her mother has not forgiven her but lets them stay. Maria tells them the story
of the man who tried to rape her and of the stolen baby.
Maria's mother tortures Maria and interrogates Matthew, both afraid that he
is Maria's boyfriend and hoping that he will fall for Peggy.
Both Maria and Matthew accept jobs that they hate.
Matthew takes Maria to get an abortion but then gets very upset, hits a man
and proposes to her. He is even willing to go back to the job that he quit,
even if the company gives him a lower position and makes him do something that
is clearly amoral (use a chip that is known to be faulty in a new product).
Maria keeps looking for a man who fits the description that the stranger of
the bench gave of her own husband (she knows his car and that he smokes a
pipe). Eventually she finds him. The man collapses when he sees her, for
no apparent reason. She simply asks him to return the money to his wife.
She does not ask any question about the stolen baby.
Maria's scheming mom (who clearly hasn't forgotten Maria for causing her
dad's heart attack) takes advantage that Maria is not home to trick Matthew
into a silly competition: the first one who gets drunk loses Maria. Except
that she gives him a bottle of real liquor and she drinks from a bottle full
of water. When he drops drunk, she drags him into Peggy's bed. When Peggy comes
home, she finds Matthew naked in her bed, and gladly sleeps next to him.
In the meantime Maria has been approached by her old boyfriend, who has been
rejected by the college and is ready to make peace. But she is not interested
in him anymore. When she gets home, her mom finds an excuse to send her into
Peggy's room so she can see Matthew in bed with her. Maria comes back, kisses
her goodnight and goes to sleep. Her mom, puzzled, walks into Peggy's room
and finds Matthew asleep with Peggy: Maria did not want to show her how
devastated she was. The following day Maria gets an abortion. Then she visits
the couple who stole the child. The woman of the bench does not talk. Her
husband shows Maria the newspaper: the child has been found in a phone booth,
in good health. The case is closed. Matthew quits
the job at the amoral company. At home he finds his father who wants him back.
Matthew finally finds the courage to beat his dad. Then he confesses to Maria
that he woke up in Peggy's bed. Maria seems to forgive him but also confesses
that she got an abortion. Minutes later she realizes that her gun is missing.
She guesses that Matthew has gone to his old company. The police are already
there. His coworkers have fled the building. Maria finds Matthew inside with
the grenade that has not exploded. She takes the grenade and throws it away.
The grenade explodes away from them. The police arrest Matthew.
Maria watches as the police car drives away.
Simple Men (1992) is an offbeat comedy and a road movie whose characters
seem to be reciting poetry (albeit in a rather unemotional and uncerimonial
manner) rather than having conversations.
Bill is a petty criminal who is trying to steal computers but
his blonde girlfriend double-crosses him in the middle of a robbery. All he
gets out of the robbery is the medallion that the guard gives him for protection
(even if it obviously did not protect the guard).
His brother Dennis is just about the opposite, a good, shy philosophy student.
Bill, who has vowed to take his revenge on the next blonde he meets, follows
Dennis, who wants to find their father, a political radical of the 1960s who
is accused of bombing the Pentagon, and has escaped.
The journey begins on the wrong foot. They meet a teenager, Kim, who is
traveling on a bus run by a nazi nun who smokes cigarettes. Kim lerts Dennis
a newspaper with an article on the botched robbery: the police are closing in
on Bill.
The brothers flee on the motorcycle that Bill fixed for a homeless man (who,
in return for the motorcycle, gets the medallion and Bill's gun), just
when the nun is walking down the street dragging a police officer.
They reach the roadside cafe and gas station owned by blonde Kate (a cafe`
reminiscent of Baghdad Cafe, populated by a crowd of bizarre characters
including an attendant who is an Hendrixian guitar player and practices his
French with everybody because he thinks he has a date with a French girl (but
the girl turns out to be Italian), whose psychopatic
husband has just got out of prison but has not yet returned home.
Bill falls in love with the blonde and tries to kiss her,
while Dennis is attracted to the
mysterious epileptic woman (Elina) who is staying there and claims that she
too is waiting for somebody (but is also afraid of somebody).
An attendant smells trouble and calls the sheriff, who finds out the two are
fugitives but doesn't seem in a hurry to do anything about it.
It turns out the person that Elina was waiting for is their father and one night
she disappears. Dennis runs after them and catches them on a boat: Elina is
his father's girlfriend and a fanatic believer in his communist ideas.
Back at the cafe`, Dennis and Kate finally make love.
In the morning, the husband is waiting in the cafe`.
The father tells Dennis that he did not plant the bomb. He's been innocent
all those years.
When he gets back to the gas station, Dennis is arrested.
Kate learns that Bill is a criminal but decides to protect him from the police
and even gives him her car to escape.
Bill drives to the boat and also sees his father. But he doesn't even try
to talk to him: he just stares at him. Then Bill drives back to Kate just
to show that he loves her, even if the police are there waiting to arrest him.

Amateur (1995)
Sophia e` vestita in abiti discinti, da prostituta. Vede che il corpo
riverso nella strada e` inanimato e fugge. Nel frattempo in un caffe`
Isabelle sta scrivendo un racconto al computer, ma la cameriera la vuole
buttare fuori perche' passa tutto il tempo li` dentro. L'uomo che sembrava
morto entra nel caffe` e Isabelle se ne prende cura. E` ferito e non ricorda
il proprio nome; anzi, non ricorda nulla. Ha in tasca soltanto del denaro
olandese, nessun documento di identita'. Isabelle se lo porta a casa, gli
rivela di essere una scrittrice di racconti pornografici che e` stata una
suora per quindici anni, fino a nove mesi prima, e adesso sta tentando
disperatamente di cambiare personalita'. Lo invita a restare a dormire li'
con lei, nel suo letto; deve pero` uscire perche' ha appuntamento con uno
sconosciuto trovato tramite un servizio di appuntamenti sessuali. Scappa
pero` dal cinema quando lui comincia a metterle le mani addosso. Poco prima
dal cinema e` stata espulsa Sophia.
Isabelle
a casa spiega all'amnesiaco perche' si fece suora: da giovane ebbe la
visione della Vergine Maria che le indico` la sua missione, di stare nel
mondo reale. Lei disobbudi` e, pur sentendosi una ninfomane, si fece
suora per scampare al suo destino. Ma adesso ha deciso di compiere la
sua missione. E per cominciare vorrebbe che lui le insegnasse a fare l'amore.
Sophia telefona all'amico Eduard che ha bisogno di vederlo e che
ha ucciso il malvagio Thomas, gettandolo dalla finestra del
suo appartamento sgangherato.
Lo smemorato nel sonno urla il nome di Sophia, minaccia di sfigurarla.
Quando si risveglia, chiede che Isabelle lo porti alla polizia.
Ma alla polizia non risulta che nessuno sia scomparso.
Una poliziotta comprensiva si commuove al suo caso.
Eduard e Sophia a un tavolo di un caffe` parlano male di Thomas, un essere
spregevole che ha fatto del male a tutti, che costrinse Sophia a diventare una
prostituta all'eta` di tredici anni, che la forzo` a recitare in film
pornografici, che le rovino` la vita in tutti i modi, e che adesso minacciava
di sfigurarla se lei si ostinava a disobbedirgli. Sophia vuole soltanto rifarsi
una vita. Eduard le promette di procurarle le chiavi di una casa fuori mano dove
potra` rifugiarsi e le da` appuntamento alla stazione. Le rivela che Thomas
ricattava il potente boss Jacques con un paio di floppy discs che contengono
informazioni scottanti. Lei approfitta di un attimo di distrazione e gli
sottrae il numero di telefono di Jacques, poi gli telefona e gli chiede
un milione di dollari in cambio dei floppy discs, da consegnare alla stazione.
Alla stazione Eduard le spiega che lui si deve nascondere perche' i sicari di
Jacques lo ucciderebbero, come uccideranno chiunque sappia dell'esistenza
di quei floppy discs. Lei capisce di averlo cacciato nei guai, ma e` troppo
tardi: i due sicari arrivano e catturano Eduard.
Sophia non prende il treno, ma salta su un taxi.
L'editor della rivista porno rifiuta il nuovo racconto di Isabelle, perche' e`
troppo poetico, non e` abbastanza disgustoso. Lo smemorato incontra un ragazzo
che gli rivela che Sophia e` il nome di una famosa pornodiva. Thomas si reca al
negozio di video ad affittarne uno di Sophia e lo porta a casa di Isabelle.
Isabelle riconosce Sophia e decide che quello e` il segno divino che
aspettava: Dio vuole che lei trovi e salvi questa ragazza.
Eduard viene picchiato e torturato con l'elettricita` dai sicari, fino al punto
che perde la parola, impazzisce e rivela l'indirizzo di Sophia. Due punk trovano
il corpo inanimato di Eduard e lo aiutano a riprendersi. Eduard non riesce a parlare
e non si regge in piedi, si comporta come un selvaggio, ma riesce a trascinarsi
via.
Eduard e` comico nel suo modo di agitarsi senza parlare, nel suo modo di trattare
la gente in modo bestiale. Lotta con una signora per una cabina telefonica
e viene arrestato.
La stessa poliziotta comprensiva si commuove al suo caso.
Isabelle e Thomas capitano nella strada dove Thomas giaceva riverso. Thomas ricorda l'appartamento
e intuisce di essere stato gettato di sotto. Isabelle trova gli abiti di Sophia e ne
indossa uno molto ose`. Cominciano a fare l'amore nel letto di Sophia, ma arrivano
i due gangster e subito dopo arriva anche Sophia. Isabelle e Thomas sono nascosti nell'armadio
e sentono Sophia che parla male di Thomas. Sophia dice di aver ucciso Thomas, ma i due gangster non le credono:
uno esce, l'altro si appresta a torturarla.
Isabelle e Thomas escono dall'armadio e
affrontano il gangster, che alla fine cade dalla finestra.
Isabelle, Thomas e Sophia scappano sull'auto dei gangster.
Ma il secondo gangster trova la borsetta di Sophia
con l'indirizzo della casa dove Sophia li sta conducendo.
Isabelle spiega a Sophia che Thomas ha un'amnesia, ma questo non commuove Sophia, che rifiuta di
parlargli o di stargli vicino.
Sophia spiega a Isabelle che Thomas e` un uomo pericoloso
e riesce a farla preoccupare: Isabelle gli da` la pistola, ma senza cartucce.
Invano Thomas giura a Sophia che
la vuole aiutare e che vuole redimere qualunque cosa abbia fatto nel suo
passato. Ancora non ricorda nulla. Sophia rifiuta di aiutarlo a ricordare.
Piu` che altro Sophia e` sconfortata perche' si rende conto di non essere riuscita
ne' ad uccidere Thomas ne' a liberarsi di quella vita. E` ancora e piu` che mai
invischiata in quel sottobosco criminale. Isabelle e` sempre piu` convita che quella
sia la sua missione.
Eduard telefona: sente la voce di Thomas e riattacca.
Allora Eduard, disperato all'idea che
Sophia sia caduta in mano all'odiato aguzzino,
approfitta dell'ingenua poliziotta, s'impadronisce di una
pistola, uccide un poliziotto, ruba un'auto della polizia e scappa,
comportandosi come un cane rabbioso. Vuole salvare Sophia, e pertanto si mette
sulla strada verso la stessa casa, inseguito dalla polizia.
Il gangster cattura Isabelle e ricatta Sophia: vuole Thomas in cambio di Isabelle. Sophia accetta, anche
se con meno entusiasmo di quanto si potrebbe pensare, se e` vero che odia
ancora Thomas. Poi sviene. Quando arriva Eduard, trova Sophia nel letto.
Thomas cattura Eduard, pensando
che si tratti di un gangster. Arriva il gangster, che spara e colpisce Sophia.
Eduard
spara al gangster, che, colpito, riesce a fuggire. Eduard lo insegue e continua
a sparargli senza ucciderlo, girandogli intorno e prendendo la mira da posizioni
diverse, finche' il gangster crolla stecchito. Poi Isabelle, Thomas ed
Eduard caricano Sophia in auto
e Isabelle li guida al suo convento, dove le suore si curano Sophia.
Eduard tratta Thomas piu` o meno
come lo tratta Sophia: odio e paura. Sophia intanto rivela a Isabelle chi e`
Thomas, cosa le ha fatto
in tutti quegli anni. Isabelle ne e` sconvolta, ma vuole sempre fare l'amore con Thomas,
perche' e` lui il messaggero divino che le ha portato il "segno". Thomas ancora
non ricorda. La polizia, sulle tracce di Eduard, ha circondato il convento. Quando
Thomas apre la porta, lo uccidono, pensando che sia Eduard.
Tutti i cattivi sono morti, compreso Thomas, che e` stato involontariamente lo
strumento per uccidere tutti gli altri.
La missione divina e` riuscita.
Sullo sfondo di questa parabola biblica c'e` il coito interrotto di Isabelle e Thomas:
lei e` rimasta vergine.
Henry Fool (1998)
Il film racconta le rocambolesche peripezie di un "garbage man", di un uomo
della spazzatura, che un profeta disoccupato e pedofilo trasforma in uno degli
uomini piu` celebri del mondo. Hartley compone un apologo filosofico che e`
volutamente eccessivo e implauibile. La narrazione e` goffa e frammentaria.
La recitazione e` quasi grottesca, oscilla fra un tono da tragedia
shakespeariano e la piu` turpidine dei bassifondi. Il film vorrebbe anche essere
comico, ma la commedia e` quasi sempre di cattivo gusto, e spesso gli scherzi
non funzionano per nulla.
Simon e` un umile uomo della spazzatura che vive con la madre e la sorella, la
prima nevrotica e depressa, la seconda quasi ninfomane. Tutti lo credono
ritardato fin da bambino. Sorprende due teppisti che fanno l'amore fra i rifiuti
e deve fuggire a casa. Lo scantinato viene affittata a un uomo vestito da
barbone che si da` arie da filosofo incompreso: Henry Fool.
E` lui a scoprire il talento
nascosto di Simon quando gli regala un quaderno su cui scrivere le sue poesie.
Le sue poesie hanno effetti diametralmente opposti su coloro che le leggono:
c'e` chi le trova stupende e c'e` chi le trova pornografiche. Il negozio che
Simon e Henry frequentano le appende e la voce si sparge rapidamente.
Henry a sua volta sta scrivendo le sue confessioni, ma non vuole che nessuno
le legga: costituiscono un manoscritto immane, in cui ripone la sua ultima
speranza di gloria. Henry viene eccitato dalle pose di Faye (la sorella),
ma alla fine preferisce buttarsi sulla madre, fra la costernazione e il disgusto
della ragazza. Henry convince Simon a lasciare il lavoro e dedicarsi allo
studio. La fama di Simon si sta spargendo al punto che diventa l'idolo delle
ragazze del liceo. Henry gli confessa la ragione per cui ha trascorso sette
anni in carcere: venne sorpreso a fare l'amore con una tredicenne. Il "parole
officer" gli sta alle costole per verificare se sti sta reinserendo in societa`.
Henry lo manda da un editore. L'editore pero` trova il manoscritto di Simon
assolutamente insignificante e non ricorda il nome di Henry. Se lo ricorda
pero` la sua segretaria: Henry era l'uomo delle pulizie. Simon capisce allora
di essersi fidato dei consigli di un fallito. La segretaria comunque e`
affascinata dalla personalita` primitiva di Simon. Sua madre intanto ha letto
le poesie di nascosto. Simon la trova nella vasca da bagno: si e` tagliata
le vene. Henry sta facendo l'amore con Faye. Simon, deluso, torna a lavorare
alla discarica. Henry convince Faye a distribuire il poema via internet.
Il poema diventa un caso letterario di cui si occupano tutti i giornali e
le televisioni. Faye e` incinta e Henry viene obbligato a sposarla.
L'editore implora Simon di firmare il contratto. Simon pone come condizione
che l'editore pubblichi anche le memorie di Henry. Ma quando finalmente Henry
gli lascia leggere il manoscritto, Simon si rende conto che si tratta di
un manoscritto orrendo. Cosi` la pensa anche l'editore, che rifiuta. Simon
firma il contratto senza la clausola e deve confessare all'amico di non
essersela sentita. Henry non sembra prendersela.
Anni dopo, Henry mantiene la famigliola con il suo lavoro alla discarica. Lui
e Faye litigano spesso, in particolare per il modo irresponsabile in cui Henry
educa il figlioletto (peraltro sempre vestito in giacca e cravatta).
Simon e` diventato uno scrittore celebre, convive con la segretaria, e vince
persino il premio Nobel.
Henry viene coinvolto in una diatriba familiare: una bambina gli confessa di
essere stata violentata dal padre e gli offre il suo corpo se lui lo uccide.
Henry va a confrontare l'uomo e trova che la moglie ha il volto segnato dai
colpi. L'uomo lo picchia e Henry nella colluttazione lo uccide. Viene accusato
di averlo ucciso per soddisfare l'offerta della bambina. Suo figlio corre
a cercare lo zio famoso e lo zio famoso accorre per aiutarlo: scambiano i
passaporti e Henry sale sull'aereo diretto a Stoccolma con il passaporto
del vincitore del Nobel.
All'ultimo momento pero` ci ripensa e scappa sulla pista...
Vaniloquio confuso sui mali della societa` americana che non risparmia nessuno
strato sociale. Hartley e` approdato al nichilismo piu` totale, ma anche a un
blasfemo senso dell'umorismo. Il senso finale di questo aforismo non e` chiaro,
in quanto non e` chiaro cosa significhi che Henry alla fine scappa dall'unica
via di salvezza che gli e` stata offerta.
Piu` che una parabola, e` un delirio febbricitante.
