Leonard Kastle
The Honeymoon Killers (1970) is a crime thriller based on a real murder
case, directed in a documentary-like manner and shot in black and white with
expressionistic overtones.
Martha is an overweight nurse with a miserable life. Her best friend submits her
name to a lonely-hearts club and Martha begins a laborious correspondence with
a Spanish man, Ray, She falls madly in love with him.
Ray makes no mystery what his business is: he marries lonely widows and then
disappears with their money.
Martha decides to move to New York with him, says goodbye to her petulant and
selfish mother, and tells everybody that they are getting married.
She arrives when Ray has just married a new victim. Martha, pretending to be
Ray's brother, helps rob the wife. When the wife finds out she has been robbed,
all she can do is pack her things and leave.
In a fit of jealousy when Ray is kissing his new wife, Martha almost drowns in
a lake and ruins the scam. Martha would prefer to go back nursing, so Ray
does not have to "work" but he refuses.
The next wife is asleep in the same room with Martha when she realizes that
they have taken all her money. She asks to call her daughter and Martha tries
to stop her. Ray, who sleeps in the living room, grabs a hammer. The wife
begs him to let her make a phone call. Then she gets scared and begins to
frantically dress up. Ray hands the hammer to Martha. Martha hits the poor
woman twice, but she is still alive. Ray tries to strangle her, but is not
strong enough to snap her neck. Martha brings a stocking and helps him
tighten it around the woman's neck until her body finally gives up.
In the morning, Martha cleans the floor.
The next victim is a kind woman who has a child. Martha is so jealous that she
poisons her and, when she refuses to take more pills, tries to strangle her.
Ray comes home just in time with the child, who sees Martha trying to kill
her mom. Ray grabs a gun and shoots the woman. Then they have to eliminate
the child, a dangerous witness: Martha drowns her in the wash basin.
Ray, outside, hears the girl's last scream and spasms.
Martha has become a zombie. She picks up the phone and calls the police.
They are arrested and will be executed.

di miele") è un thriller basato su un caso realmente accaduto d弛micidio,
diretto seguendo uno stile documentaristico, in bianco e nero e venato di
sfumature espressionistiche.
Martha è un段nfermiera con qualche chilo di troppo e una vita alquanto
miserabile, ma quando la miglior amica manda il suo nominativo ad un club di
cuori solitari, la donna inizia una laboriosa corrispondenza con un uomo
spagnolo, Ray, e finisce per innamorarsi follemente di lui.
Ray non fa mistero di quale sia il suo "lavoro": sposare vedove solitarie e
quindi scomparire con i loro soldi. Martha decide di andare a New York con
lui, dice addio alla petulante ed egoista madre e comunica a tutti che si
sposerà con Ray.
Arriva in città proprio quando l置omo ha appena sposato una nuova "vittima".
Martha, fingendo di essere la sorella di Ray, aiuta a derubare la sua nuova
moglie. Quando la donna, troppo tardi, capisce di essere stata rapinata,
tutto ciò che può fare è raccogliere le sue cose e andarsene. In un accesso
di gelosia, quando Ray sta baciando la sua nuova moglie, Martha quasi
scoppia a piangere rovinando tutto il piano. La donna preferirebbe tornare
indietro e riprendere a fare l段nfermiera, così che Ray non debba più fare
quel "lavoro", ma l置omo si oppone.
La moglie successiva dorme nella stessa camera in cui è anche Martha, e
quando capisce che le hanno preso tutti i soldi cerca di chiamare sua figlia
ma Martha riesce a fermarla. Ray, che dorme in soggiorno, si procura un
martello; la moglie gli chiede di poter fare una telefonata, quindi
scoprendo il tranello le prende paura e comincia affannosamente a vestirsi.
Ray passa il martello a Martha, che colpisce la povera donna due volte,
senza però riuscire a finirla. Ray prova allora a strangolarla, ma non è
forte abbastanza per farlo; infine quando Martha le stringe attorno al collo
una calza, finalmente il corpo della donna giace privo di vita. La mattina
dopo Martha ripulisce il pavimento dalle tracce del delitto.
La vittima successiva è una donna generosa, madre di una bambina. Martha è
così gelosa che cerca di avvelenarla, e quando la donna si rifiuta di
prendere altre pillole Martha prova a finirla strangolandola. Ray, con la
bambina, torna a casa proprio in quel momento, così la piccola assiste al
tentativo di Martha di uccidere sua madre. Ray uccide la donna con una
pistola, quindi decidono di eliminare anche la piccola, diventata una
pericolosa testimone. Martha affoga la bambina nel lavabo; Ray, fuori,
ascolta le ultime urla della bambina e i suoi spasmi d誕gonia. Martha esce
da quest置ltimo delitto ridotta a poco più che uno zombie: prende in mano il
telefono e chiama la polizia.
I due sono arrestati e successivamente condannati a morte.
Leondard Kastle non ha mai più girato un altro film.
