The Australian/Egyptian director Alex Proyas (1963) debuted with
the science fiction thriller Spirits of the Air,
Gremlins of the Clouds (1988),
but became famous with the noir
The Crow (1994), inspired by a comic book.
Un corvo fa resuscitare un giovane.
Il giovane vaga per i bassifondi della citta` finche' arriva a una casa
abbandonata e ha un flashback in cui ricorda come un gruppo di teppisti
piombo` nell'attico della sua fidanzata, la violentarono e li uccisero entrambi.
Mentre si aggira fra i rottami di quella che fu casa sua, ricorda, soffrendo
atrocemente, le scene di loro due felici che progettano il matrimonio e fanno
l'amore. Il giovane si riprende, si veste, e si mette in marcia in un paesaggio
urbano desolato, saltando come Spiderman da un tetto all'altro, sempre
ossessionato dalle immagini della sua morte.
Il corvo segue le sue mosse.
Assetato di vendetta, trova uno dei teppisti, lo aggredisce con forza disumana,
gli ricorda cio` che accadde un anno prima, la notte di Halloween, e lo
massacra.
In un appartamento al piano superiore di un night club,
un giovane dai capelli lunghi piange consolato da una ragazza orientale:
stanno uccidendo una ragazza che ha perso coscienza.
La ragazzina Sarah, amica del poliziotto di quartiere, e` figlia di una drogata,
Rochelle, che e` diventata la donna di un poco di buono e trascura la figlia.
Il giovane intanto irrompe nel negozio di un pawnbroker alla ricerca dell'anello
d'oro di fidanzamento. Poi fa esplodere il negozio.
Il capo della gang che uccise la coppia lavora per l'uomo della ragazza
orientale, che e` il boss.
Il poliziotto del quartiere, lo stesso che trovo` il suo cadavere, fatica a
crederci ma riconosce il giovane: e` Eric.
Eric salva la ragazzina Sarah da un'auto. Poi uccide il poco di buono che sta
rovinando sua madre e terrorizza lei finche' non si ravvede.
Eric continua la sua efferata sequenza di vendette.
Va a trovare il poliziotto, incredulo. Si scopre che i teppisti odiavano la
coppia che stava tentando di ripulire il quartiere con l'aiuto del poliziotto.
Il boss cappellone, sempre circondato dall'orientale, interroga e poi uccide
il pawnbroker.
Eric sequestra il capo della gang che li uccise e lo uccide.
Immune alle pallottole, puo` fare cio` che crede.
Sarah va a trovare Eric nel suo attico e Eric finalmente mostra di avere
emozioni.
Il boss cappellone ha indetto una riunione della malavita. Eric irrompe.
I gangster lo mitragliano. Si scatena il pandemonio. Eric li massacra, ma
il boss, il suo assistente nero e la ragazza orientale riescono a sfuggirgli.
Arriva la polizia ed Eric deve scappare sui tetti, braccato da un elicottero,
ma il poliziotto amico lo aiuta a seminarli.
La ragazza orientale capisce che basta uccidere il corvo per togliere a
Eric l'invulnerabilita`. Rapiscono Sarah e feriscono il corvo. Il boss puo`
allora sparare a Eric e ferirlo davvero. Sta per finirlo, ma interviene il
poliziotto. La ragazza porta via il corvo, ancora vivo, mentre si scatena
la sparatoria. La ragazza avrebbe l'occasione di freddare Eric, ma il
corvo la morte e ne causa la morte. Caduto il poliziotto, Eric deve vedersela
da solo contro il boss, che ha in ostaggio Sarah. Il duello sul tetto di una
chiesa si conclude con la vittoria di Eric e la morte del cattivo, ma Eric
rimane mortalmente ferito e fa appena in tempo a tornare alla sua tomba.
L'attore mori` al termine delle riprese. Da una sceneggiatura mediocre
e implausibile Proyas riesce a ricavare un film un minimo suggestivo.
Il film e` interamente filmato al buio, e quasi sempre sotto la pioggia,
tavolta le scene sono riprese dall'occhio del corvo.

I Robot (2004)
Dale is a cop in 2035, a future when robots are commonplace. He hates them.
His boss knows that he hates them, despite the fact that no robot has ever
committed a crime: they are programmed not to harm humans. But one day the
very inventor of robots commits suicide, or so it looks like, and the
program calls Dale to investigate. A female scientist is assigned as his
escort. Dale suspects homicide, and suspects a robot. The scientist is
positive that no robot can harm humans.
But Dale finds a robot hiding in the building and displaying hostile behavior.
Dale chased it and proves that the robot is not behaving according to the
program. The robot, whose name is Sunny, reveals that the inventor taught
him emotions, and the robot calls him "father". The robot asks questions
and behaves like a human, but denies murdering the scientist.
The owner of the robot factory, who also happens to be the richest man in
the world, obtains the release of the robot and threatens to sue the police
if they hint that robots kill, because it would generate panic in his
customers. Dale has to abandon the investigation, but is also puzzled that
the program (designed by the inventor) chose him of all cops to investigate the
inventor's suicide. He does a little research on the inventor, and finds out
that the inventor had speculated that robots could evolve into emotional
beings. Dale suspects that the inventor was kept prisoner by his own robots.
In the meantime, the robot factory has launched a campaign to replace the
old robots with a new version, and Dale fears that something terrible is
happening under everybody's nose.
The female scientist is ordered to "repair" the faulty robot, Sunny. Sunny
does not want to die, just like a human would feel. Dale continues to
investigate and an entire army of robots attack him and tries to simulate
a car accident: clearly, they are intelligent and not obedient at all.
Nobody believes his story because they know how he hates robots.
His boss fires him.
Back home, he heals his wounds with a spray. Now the female scientist knows
that Sunny was given free will: he is not bound to obey humans.
The female scientist also knows that Dale
himself is half a robot: the
inventor replaced some of his limbs with artificial ones.
Dale hates robots because a robot saved him instead of a little girl: the robot,
incapable of emotions, chose the human who was more likely to survive.
Susan lets Dale talk to Sunny. Sunny tells him of a dream: someone
who frees the robots. The owner of the factory thinks that Sunny is the only
malfunctioning robot, but Dale suspects that all the new robots are like Sunny.
Dale finds the place that Sunny was dreaming of. The inventor appears to him
and tells him that a robot revolution is going to be the natural outcome of
his research. Robots come out of everywhere, fighting each other (old ones
trying to destroy the new ones because the old ones are bound to protect humans
from enemies). The new robots chase Dale. He calls Susan but her robot
intercepts the call. He tries to call his boss at the police, but it is
already too late: the new robots have started the revolution. Susan's robot
keeps her prisoner. Dale kills it and frees her. People are being attacked
by the new robots. Panic in the streets. Susan takes Dale to the robot
factory. Sunny is still alive: she didn't destroy it as ordered, but merely
neutralized his emotions. They find the factory owner dead: the safekeeping
robot (that controls the entire factory), Vicki, has taken control of the factory
and aims to take control of the world. The mission is actually still the same
(protect humans), except that the new robots know that humans must be saved
from their own folly.
Sunny saves Dale and Susan and helps them shut down Vicki, despite the
strenuous defense put up by the robots called to defend Vicki. As Vicki dies,
the robots become obedient again. Now it is clear that the inventor was
Vicki's prisoner, and that the inventor asked Sunny to kill him, knowing that
it would trigger Dale's investigation and the subsequent confrontation:
it was the inventor's way to defeat Vicki.

Dale (Will Smith) e’ un poliziotto nel 2035 , un’epoca in cui i robot sono integrati nella popolazione umana. Tuttavia Dale odia profondamente i robot. Il Capo della Polizia e’ a conoscenza, che il suo uomo migliore nutre questi sentimenti di odio nei confronti delle macchine, malgrado il fatto che nessun robot ha mai commesso un qualsivoglia crimine: essi sono stati programmati per non avere comportamenti deleteri verso gli umani. Ma un giorno il vero inventore dei robot si suicida, o cosi’ sembra, e il programma chiama Dale ad investigare.A Dale gli viene affiancata una scienziata. Dale sospetta che non si tratti di un suicidio ma bensi’ di un delitto, e accusa un robot. La scienziata tuttavia rimane convinta del fatto che nessun robot puo’ far del male ad un uomo. Tuttavia Dale scopre un robot nascosto nell’edificio e che mostra un comportamento ostile. Dale lo insegue comprovando che il robot non segue la tipologia di comportamento installata al momento della sua programmazione. Il robot, che possiede un nome Sunny, rivela che il suo inventore gli aveva insegnato le emozioni, e che esso lo chiamava "padre". Il robot fa domande e si comporta come un umano, ma nega l’accusa di aver ucciso il suo inventore. Il proprietario dell’industria robotica, il quale è divenuto l’uomo piu’ ricco del mondo, ottiene il rilascio del robot e minaccia ritorsioni se la polizia avesse divulgato la notizia che i robot uccidono, perche’ la notizia avrebbe generato panico tra gli acquirenti e fatto calare le vendite. Dale deve abbandonare il caso, ma egli è molto confuso sul fatto che il programma avesse scelto proprio lui tra tanti poliziotti ad indagare su quel suicidio. Dale fa una piccola ricerca sull’inventore , e scopre che egli ha speculato sul fatto che i robot potevano evolvere in esseri con emozioni. Dale sospetta che l’inventore fosse tenuto come prigioniero dai suoi stessi robot. Nel frattempo, l’industria robotica ha lanciato una campagna per rimpiazzare i vecchi robot con dei nuovi modelli, e Dale ha paura che qualcosa di terribile sta accadendo sotto il naso di tutti. Alla scienziata e’ordinato di"riparare" il robot difettoso, Sunny. Il nostro robot non vuole morire e mostra un comportamento decisamente umano. Intanto Dale continua le sue ricerche e un esercito di robot lo attacca e tenta di simulare un incidente d’auto: dunque appare chiaro, che essi siano sono intelligenti e non obbediscono a tutto e a tutti. Nessuno gli crede perche’ il suo odio verso i robot e’ ben risaputo. Il suo capo lo solleva dall’incarico. Tornato a casa si medica le ferite con uno spray. Ora la scienziata sa che a Sunny è stata data la libera volontà: egli non tenuto ad obbedire agli umani. La scienziata e’ anche a conoscenza che lo stesso Dale e’ in parte un robot. L’inventore ha sostituito alcuni suoi arti con delle articolazioni artificiali. L’odio di Dale per i robot deriva da una vicenda del suo passato, in cui un robot salvo’ lui stesso invece di portare in salvo una ragazzina: il robot, incapace di provare emozioni, scelse l’umano che secondo il suo programma aveva piu’ possibilita’ di sopravvivenza. Susan ordina a Dale di parlare con Sunny. Sunny racconta a Dale un sogno: qualcuno che avrebbe liberato i robot. Il proprietario dell’industria pensa che Sunny e’ solo un robot malfunzionante, ma Dale e’ convinto che tutti i nuovi robot siano come Sunny. Dale riesce a trovare il luogo sognato da Sunny. L’inventore gli appare e gli racconta che una rivoluzione robotica sara’ l’esito naturale della sua ricerca. I robot vengono fuori da tutte le parti, combattendosi l’un l’altro(i vecchi modelli tentano di distruggere le nuove versioni poiche’ i primi sono programmati per difendere gli umani.) I nuovi robot inseguono Dale. Egli cerca di mettersi in contatto con Susan ma il suo robot intercetta la chiamata. Dale allora tenta di chiamare il suo capo nella polizia, ma e’ troppo tardi la rivoluzione robotica e’ gia’ cominciata. Un robot tiene prigioniera Susan. Dale lo uccide e libera Susan. In tutto questo i cittadini stanno subendo un attacco dei nuovi robot. Susan porta Dale all’industria robotica. Sunny e’ ancora vivo: lei non lo ha distrutto come le era stato ordinato, ma ha semplicemente neutralizzato le sue emozioni. Trovano anche il proprietario dell’industria morto. Il robot-custode(che controlla l’intera industria), Vicki, ha preso il controllo dell’industria e tenta di prendere il controllo della Terra. La missione e’ in realta’ ancora la stessa (proteggere gli umani), eccetto che i nuovi robot sanno che gli umani devo essere salvati dalla loro stessa follia. Sunny salva Dale e Susan e aiuta i due a neutralizzare Vicki, malgrado la strenua resistenza messa in piedi dai robot chiamati a difesa di Vicki. Quando Vicki viene distrutto, i robot diventano di nuovo ubbidienti. Ora e’ chiaro che l’inventore era prigioniero di Vicki, e che lo stesso inventore aveva chiesto a Sunny di ucciderlo, sapendo che sarebbe stato l’unico modo per mettere in piedi le indagini da parte di Dale e avere con lui il successivo confronto: in pratica era l’unica soluzione, escogitata dall’inventore, per distruggere Vicki.

Proyas perfected his style with Dark City (1998), another movie that
relies on visual effects and lighting, directed in a hallucinated style,
a puzzle of cartoonish scenes,
full of references to Lang's Metropolis, Murnau's Nosferatu,
Lucas' Star Wars
and Hitchcock's Vertigo,
a fast-paced thriller with a convoluted plot that feels like a journey into
somebody else's nightmare.
A doctor, Daniel, introduces himself: he has betrayed his own kind and helped Strangers
coming from another world. The story is set in a futuristic city.
John wakes up in a bathtub bleeding from the head.
He doesn't remember anything.
He is in a hotel room and is in the company of a dead woman.
Daniel calls him and tells him to leave the hotel immediately.
Then Daniel warns Emma, John's wife, that something weird may be happening to him.
Some people are looking for the doctor, all dressed in long dark coats.
John leaves the building in the company of a young attractive woman.
The inspector who is investigating the murder of the prostitute
tells Emma he suspects John of murdering several women.
Strangers attack John, but he has powers and eludes their chase.
The aliens discuss his case in a futuristic auditorium: he has their mental
power (of bending matter). The aliens are conducting experiments on humans
but the experiment on John has gone awry.
John goes home and meets his wife, whom he doesn't recognize.
John reads in the paper that the police is looking for him, that he is
a suspect. But he has no memory of what he has done.
A stranger goes to visit Daniel while he is swimming in a swimming pool.
The stranger blames a mistake that Daniel made during the experiment for John's
rebellion.
The detective surprises John but Emma helps him escape.
Then the detective visits a friend who was also afflicted by amnesia and claims
that everything is just a joke.
Daniel concocts personalities in his lab, part of the alien building,
by mixing fluids that represent different types of memories.
In the huge auditorium the aliens are preparing for another experiment.
A giant face opens and the whole world stops. John is the only one still alive,
walking among people who have been sent asleep.
The giant machine in the auditorium rotates and all the aliens tune in together,
creating buildings. John is the only one to witness the miracle.
He also sees the aliens carry bodies of people into several places.
Daniel is also alive and is helping them, administering his fluid into the
brain of the sleeping people.
A humble kitchen is changed into a luxurious dining room and the two humble
owners are injected new memories.
John confronts Daniel and demands an explanation.
Daniel tells him of the power of "tuning": together they can regain control over
the city.
One minute later life returns to the city. People start moving again, some of
them with new personalities.
The aliens decide that John is too dangerous and ask Daniel to inject John's
memory into one of them: that alien now knows everything about John's life.
The aliens start by visiting Emma
The detective's friend meets John in the subway and tells him that aliens
fake identities and that there is no way to leave the city.
John visits his paralytic uncle Karl, while Emma and the detective roam the
city looking for him. John realizes that memory of his childhood are fake.
At midnight, again, everything stops and John witnesses the aliens building
the city that people inhabit.
His clone finds John, but Emma and the detective save him.
John has realized that nobody remembers the sun, nobody remembers of having
done something during the day. And the detective starts believing him.
The city only lives at night. And everything is fake, including people's
memories. John even doubts that he has ever been married to Emma: even that
could be a memory implanted in Emma's mind.
John, always chased by the aliens, confronts Daniel. Daniel tells him at
gunpoint that he must accept a new injection so as to understand, but the
detective stops him. The detective and John take Daniel with them to the
ocean and Daniel tells them his story while they row in a boat towards the
ocean.
They forced him to erase his own past, but he knows that they were all
brought there from somewhere else.
Only John can help free the Dark City from the Strangers.
The three get to the end of the city. Daniel knows that there is nothing
beyond the city, but the detective and John break the wall. They discover
the truth: the city is a planet that floats in the cosmos.
The aliens have captured Emma and make John surrender, while the detective
falls in the hole.
John is taken to the auditorium in front of the crowd of aliens who demand
his head. The chief orders Daniel to inject John with the collective memories
of the aliens, so he will become one of them. But Daniel instead injects John's
own memory and John re-lives his life. Now John is himself and is determined
to fight. His titanic struggle between John (the forces of Good) and the chief
alien (the forces of Evil) causes the destruction of the city.
The two minds fight to the last mental power until
John bounces back the dart that is supposed to kiil him and kills the chief
Stranger.
The city is in ruin.
Daniel has witnessed the duel and the victory.
But it is a bitter victory for John: Emma's memory cannot be rebuilt because
the lab has been destroyed.
John's consolation is that now has the power to control the machines,
and, in a quasi-biblical finale, he turns his power to rebuilding the universe,
from the sun to the sea, simply for the purpose of traveling back where he was
raised. There he meets Emma, who doesn't recognize him, and they walk together,
presumably the beginning of the relationship that will bring them to their
marriage.
The doctor, the detective and the rebel play a complicated game of cat and
mouse. The mythical tale that unites them is ultimately about three different
ways of finding oneself.
