Stripes (1981) is a very light comedy that just goes for the easy
laughs with no pretense of social satire or revolutionary style.
Lengthy and boring.
John (Bill Murray)
is an unhappy cab driver. His girlfriend leaves him because he still
behaves like a child.
His friend Russ is a teacher of english for foreigners, and is equally
frustrated.
John has a great idea: join the army. And he takes Russ into it.
They are trained by the sadistic sergeant Hulka and meet other recruits like
fat Dewey and commander John Larroquette.
The setting is just an excuse for a series of more or less funny gags.
Ghostbusters (1989) e` una
comica senza pretese, ma anche una colossale parodia dei film dell'orrore.
Bill Murray (il donnaiolo), Dan Aykroyd (l'onesto) e Harold Ramis (lo
scienziato), espulsi dall'universita`, hanno aperto una ditta specializzata
nella caccia ai fantasmi.
Non fanno molti affari, come ben sa la malcapitata segretaria che non ha nulla
da fare nel loro ufficio sgangherato. Assumono un nero un po' scettico e gli
insegnano il mestiere. Sigourney Weaver vede la loro pubblicita` per televisione
poco prima di avere delle allucinazioni che sono piu` di semplici allucinazioni.
Si precipita da loro e Murray si offre, naturalmente di aiutarla. L'appartamento
e` a posto e Murray viene messo gentilmente alla porta quando dichiara alla
donna il suo amore. Sullo stesso piano vive un povero tonto, pateticamente
invaghito della donna, che rimane sistematicamente chiuso fuori dal proprio
appartamento.
Il fantasma visto dalla donna e` soltanto l'inizio di una catena di avvenimenti
simili. I quattro cominciano a fare soldi e la fama si sparge per la citta'.
E` cosi` che la donna, concertista, sorride a Murray la volta che lui va a
salutarla all'uscita da un concerto e accetta il suo invito a cena. La stessa
sera il tonto l'ha invitata a un suo party.
Al party del tonto lei non puo` andare perche' aspetta Murray. Entrata nel
suo appartamento, pero', viene assalita da gli spiriti. Quando Murray arriva,
la trova in trance, trasformata in una sorta di cane vestito in maniera molto
sensuale che chiede del keymaster. Cerca invano di risvegliarla, poi torna al
laboratorio.
Nel frattempo il party del tonto e` stato interrotto da un mostro che ha
inseguito il tonto e alla fine lo ha penetrato. Adesso il tonto si aggira per
le strade della citta` alla ricerca della donna: e` lui il keymaster.
La polizia lo arresta e lo consegna ai ghostbusters.
Gli eventi pero` precipitano. Un ufficiale un po' fanatico del comune irrompe
nel loro laboratorio con un'autorizzazione a perquisirlo e ordina di spegnere
i macchinari. Invano i ghostbusters lo mettono in guardia che in tal modo
liberera` tutti gli spiriti: lui procede e causa un'esplosione ciclopica.
Il tonto riesce a scappare e si avvia verso il grattacielo per ricongiungersi
alla donna.
I ghostbusters vengono arrestati dal fanatico, ma la citta` e` ora in preda agli
spiriti che sono stati liberati dal funzionario. Il sindaco tiene un consiglio
a cui partecipano il funzionario, deciso a annientare i ghostbusters, il
cardinale, che se ne lava le mani, e i ghostbusters, che lo mettono in guardia
dall'apocalisse che puo` succedere. Il sindaco cede e concede loro pieni poteri.
Lo scienziato ha capito cos'e` successo: il grattacielo dove vivono la donna
e il tonto e` una sorgente di energia malefica progettata dall'architetto.
Bisogna intervenire prima che sia troppo tardi.
Il loro arrivo viene salutato trionfalmente dalla folla, ma gli spiriti stanno
causando terremoti e tempeste. Nello scenario apocalittico sulla cima di un
grattacielo si svolge una comica lotta fra loro quattro e la donna tramutata
in un essere alieno. Loro riescono a disintegrarla (e ne sono i primi sorpresi),
ma per colpa dell'innocente Aykroyd viene materializzato un gigantesco pupazzo
di gomma della pubblicita', che i bambini amano tanto, e che in questo caso
si mette a seminare il terrore per le strade della citta'. I quattro riescono
ad innientare anche lui con i loro potenti raggi. Dopo un'ultima scarica
di raggi disintegratori contro il mostro che sembra governare l'edificio,
una tremenda esplosione fa saltare in aria tutto. Alla fine sono tutti avvolti
in una sostanza gelatinosa, ma e` tornata la calma. E fra le macerie trovano
sia la donna sia il tonto che sono tornati alla normalita'.
Scendono dal grattacielo e vengono portati in trionfo dalla folla.
Dave (1993) could be a Frank Capra comedy.
Dave is a humble middle-class man in a small town. As a hobby, he likes
to do impersonations of the president. It turns out that the secret services
are looking for a double for the president, and choose him. He is supposed
to do it only once, and doesn't know why. The truth is that the president
is busy having sex with his secretary. But something unpredictable happens:
the president has a heart attack and falls in a coma. The man who has
architected the president's administration, the ever-present Bob, decides
to continue the charade so to keep control on the government. Dave's
impersonation becomes a full-time job. He learns that the president and
the first lady hate each other. He follows Bob's orders to the letter until
one day he finds out that the project for a homeless shelter has been canceled.
He calls an old buddy from his hometown to fix the budget so that the
project can be reactivated. Bob is furious and even considers killing him.
In the meantime, that gesture aroused suspicion in the first lady, who knows how
cynical and selfish the real president is. She confronts him and he
confesses. She falls in love with him: he is everything that the real
president never was. She gives him the strength to really "be" the president.
Dave fires Bob and announces a bold program to solve the problems that afflict
ordinary people. Unfortunately, the real president was a corrupt man with
a lot of skeletons in the closet, and Bob simply goes on tv and reveals
them. Bob doesn't even need to "frame" the president: the truth itself
is enough to destroy the president. Dave admits publicly the wrongdoing,
but also implicates Bob himself, thus destroying his career too (Bob was
already planning to run for president). And Dave makes sure that the
vice-president is cleared of any suspicion: the vice-president, who was
shunned by the real president, is a good man, and, de facto, Dave
is handing him the job. At the end of his speech, Dave fakes a heart
attack and is hurried by secret services to the hospital, But the man
who arrives at the hospital is the real president, and Dave resumes
his real identity. The president dies, the vice-president is sworn in
as new president, Bob is convicted of his crimes.
Six Days, Seven Nights (1998)
