Suna no onna/ Woman in the Dunes (1964) is a philosophical allegory for the human condition.
The film opens with surreal images of the desert and its sand dunes and a series of close-ups of insects. A man is climbing the sands. As the camera zooms out, we measure his loneliness in the desert. His footsteps are the only sign of life. He is carrying a camera and a backpack. He takes pictures of the insects and pins them to a piece of paper in his box. Eventually, he arrives to the sea. He lies down and rests. His mind flies to his problems with a woman, to his hatred of official documents. He rests for too long and misses his bus.
Some villagers show up and offer him accomodation. He gladly accepts as he enjoys sharing the life of villages. The camera zooms out and shows the village haunted and submerged by the sand dunes. To get to the house, he has to climb down a rope ladder. Basically, the house has been built in a hole: it is completely surrounded by a wall of sand. A woman welcomes him in the dark and shows him to a humble room. She is kind and simple. She prepares a frugal dinner that he eats under an umbrella: the sand leaks through the wood of the roof. The woman explains how the village survives in the very harsh conditions of the desert. The main enemy is the sand: the sand rots the wood, the sand invades the house, the sand killed her husband and her only daughter. The entomologist is shocked by her terrible life, but is more interested in the insects he has collected in his box. He is searching for a very rare one. She talks to him as if he is going to stay a long time. At night, he sees her work very hard to get rid of the sand. Carriers lift her boxes full of sand to dispose of it. She explains that villagers are very proud of their village and their lifestyle, no matter what. They all seem to help each other. That night he dreams the stripes of sand on the dunes, while she is sleeping naked next to him, her body already covered with sand. In the morning he gets dressed quietly, leaves a "thank you" note and walks out to resume his journey. But the rope ladder is no longer there. He tries to climb the sand walls, but he can hardly move one step up. He has no choice but to wake up the woman, while a huge slab of sand crashes down. She gets dressed and apologizes. He understands that he has been trapped there on purpose. The woman tries to explain that it is tough for a woman to live alone and that the house could get buried if she didn't work so hard. And that would cause the house next door to get buried and so forth. It is essential that the village finds more manpower. The man, furious, tries again to climb up the wall of sand, but with the only effect of causing an avalanche that buries him. When he wakes up, she is washing him. She explains that they must sleep naked otherwise they may get sand rash.
He tries to escape again. This time he ties them and then calls for the villagers to lift him up. They drop the rope, lift him half way... and then let the rope drop down. The man has to accept that he has missed the bus again and decides to enjoy that experience for a little longer. He sees how each house gets rations for a week. The woman tells him of other tourists who have been captured. She's hurting and thirsty and he can't see her suffer. So he unties her, but forbids her any more work. In a fit of anger, he tries to demolish the walls (so he could use the wood to build a ladder) but the woman fights him. They fall on the floor, their bodies panting and covered with sand. The house is shaken by an avalanche and more sand falls on them while they hug on the floor. He brushes the sand off her body and just the touch of his hands excite her. They make love in the sand that has flooded the floor.
When he realizes that they have run out of water, he accepts to start working. She teaches him how to shovel sand. She has no desire to leave: that is her world, and she is afraid of the world. The only reason man live with her is because of the sand. She's a good woman, a perfect wife, but would be nobody outside. That is her element.
He wants to be washed even if she's tired after a full day of work. Again, she craves for a male body and they make love. He tries again to escape, this time with a rope and a hook, throwing them from the roof. He manages to climb the wall and starts running. He runs in the moonlight but doesn't know in which direction to run. Soon, lights and dogs appear behind him. He keeps running in the desert until he falls in quicksand. Then he begs for help and the villagers dig him up. They take him back to the village and drop him down again in the woman's house.
Days go by, but he still hopes for help. He digs in the sand a trap for crows, hoping to catch one and attach a note to its neck. Three months later, he begs the villagers for one hour a day to go and see the sea. They reply that they will consider his request.
The woman weaves necklaces of beads. It's another humble job, but she hopes that she can buy a radio with the little money she makes. He is angry and throws her beads away. But then helps her to carefully dig them up. He even burns his collection of insects to give her a new box for her necklaces. She tells him that she is scared of being left alone again.
The villagers have discussed his request and have decided that they will grant his wish if he makes love to her in front of them. In the middle of the night, they crowd the rim of the wall, masked and intoxicated, flashing light at the couple. The woman ignores them and keeps shoveling sand. He hesitates but then tries to rape her. She fights back and calls him a fool, until eventually he gives up and they leave.
One day, as he checks his trap for crows, the man realizes that it is full of water: by accident, he has discovered a new system to get water for the houses from the sand. He doesn't tell the woman, but sets out to improve his invention. She is now scared of something else, and he finds out the following day: she is pregnant and something is wrong with her pregnancy. The villagers come down to assist her and decide to lift her up and take her to a doctor. He is left alone and has his chance to escape. He climbs up and walks to the sea. But then simply walks back and down to the house. He is now more interested in his invention than in returning to Tokyo.
A list of missing persons: Jumpei Niki (we learn his name only at the very end) is an average Tokyo employee who has disappeared mysteriously for seven years.

Rikyu (1989)

Hiroshi Teshigahara (nato nel 1927), figlio del fondatore della scuola d’ikebana Sogetsu, si occupò inizialmente di arte. Nel 1950 Teshigahara organizzò il gruppo Seiki (Secolo). Si trattava di artisti e intellettuali che condividevano l’interesse per la letteratura avant-garde, il teatro, e l’arte. Poi diresse quattro film basati su racconti kafkiani e su scritti di Kobe Abe, e con musiche di Toru Takemitsu.

Suna no onna/ Donna di sabbia (1964) e` un’allegoria filosofica della condizione umana. Il film e` tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di Kobe Abe.

Il film si apre con immagini surreali del deserto, delle sue dune, e con primi piani d’insetti. Un uomo sta salendo una duna. Quando l’obbiettivo zooma, ci rendiamo conto della sua solitudine nel vasto deserto. Le sue impronte lasciate sulla sabbia sono l’unico segno di vita. Ha con se’ una macchina fotografica e uno zaino. Fotografa gli insetti, li prende e li attacca su un foglio di carta che poi ripone in una scatola. Alla fine giunge al mare. Si sdraia e riposa. Pensa ai suoi problemi con una donna e alla sua avversione per i documenti ufficiali. Riposa per troppo tempo e alla fine perde il suo pullman.

Compaiono alcuni abitanti di un villaggio che gli offrono un posto dove stare. L’uomo accetta volentieri come se lo divertisse l’idea di trascorrere un po’ tempo con quella gente. L’obbiettivo zooma e ci mostra il villaggio completamente catturato e immerso nelle dune di sabbia. Per raggiungere la casa deve scendere per una scala di corda. In pratica la casa e` in fondo ad una grande buca di sabbia:e` completamente circondata da mura di sabbia. Una donna nel buio gli da` il benvenuto e lo introduce in una modesta stanza. Lei e` gentile e molto semplice. Prepara una cena frugale che l’uomo mangia sotto un ombrello: la sabbia cade infatti dal legno del tetto. La donna gli spiega come gli abitanti del villaggio facciano a sopravvivere in condizioni cosi` avverse. Nel deserto il maggior nemico e` la sabbia: la sabbia consuma il legno, invade le case, la sabbia ha ucciso suo marito e la sua unica figlia. . L’entomologo e` scosso dalla terribile vita della donna, ma e` piu` interessato agli insetti che ha collezionato nella sua scatola. E` alla ricerca di uno molto raro. Lei parla con lui come se dovesse trattenersi a lungo. Durante la notte la vede lavorare duramente per liberarsi dalla sabbia. Spiega che nonostante tutto gli abitanti del posto sono molto orgogliosi del loro villaggio, e del loro modo di vita. Sembra che si aiutino l’un l’altro. Quella notte l’uomo sogna le linee di sabbia che ornano le dune, mentre la donna gli dorme nuda accanto, con il corpo coperto di sabbia. La mattina si veste con calma, lascia un biglietto con su scritto "Grazie" ed esce per proseguire il suo viaggio. Ma la scala di corda non e` piu` li`. Cerca di scalare la parete di sabbia, ma non ci riesce. Non ha altra scelta se non quella di svegliare la donna, mentre un lastrone di sabbia frana. La donna si veste e si scusa. L’uomo capisce che e` trattenuto li` di proposito. La donna cerca di spiegargli che e` duro per lei vivere da sola e che la sua casa verra` sepolta dalla sabbia se non lavora sodo. E che se la sua casa verra` sepolta lo sara` anche quella accanto e cosi` via. E’ essenziale che il villaggio trovi piu` forze maschili. L’uomo, furioso, cerca di nuovo di scalare la parete sabbiosa, ma con il solo risultato di essere sepolto da un cumulo di sabbia. Quando si sveglia, la donna lo sta lavando. Gli spiega che dovrebbero dormire nudi. Lui cerca di fuggire di nuovo. Questa volta lega la donna e chiama gli altri abitanti perche’ lo tirassero fuori di li`. Loro fanno scendere la scala, lo tirano su per meta` e dopo lasciano ricadere la scala. L’uomo deve accettare il fatto di avere perso di nuovo il pullman ed e` costretto a restare li` ancora. Vede come ogni famiglia si procura le scorte per una settimana. La donna gli racconta di altri turisti che erano stati catturati. Era addolorata e assetata, e lui non poteva vederla soffrire. Cosi` decide di slegarla, ma le proibisce di lavorare. In un impeto di rabbia cerca di buttare giu` una parete, per utilizzare il legno come scala, ma la donna lo colpisce e cadono a terra., i corpi disegnati e coperti dalla sabbia. La casa viene scossa da una valanga e ancora piu` sabbia cade su di loro mentre si stringono sul pavimento. L’uomo scosta la sabbia dal corpo della donna, e soltanto il tocco delle sue mani la fa eccitare. Fanno l’amore nella sabbia che aveva interamente coperto il pavimento.

Quando lui realizza che avrebbero dovuto cercare dell’acqua accetta di cominciare a lavorare. La donna gli insegna come spalare la sabbia. Lei non aveva intenzione di lasciare qual posto: quello era il suo mondo, e il mondo esterno la spaventava. La sola ragione per la quale gli uomini restavano con lei era per la sabbia. Era una brava donna, una moglie perfetta, ma fuori non sarebbe stata nessuno. Quello era il suo elemento. Lui vuole essere lavato, anche se sa che la donna e` stanca dopo una dura giornata di lavoro. Di nuovo lei desidera ardentemente un corpo maschile, e fanno l’amore.

Lui cerca ancora di scappare, questa volta con una scala e un uncino, ricavati dal tetto. Riesce a scalare il muro e comincia a correre. Corre al chiarore della luna, ma non sa in che direzione andare.

Subito compaiono dietro di lui luci e dei cani. Continua a correre nel deserto finche’ finisce nelle sabbie mobili. Chiede aiuto e i villeggianti lo tirano fuori. Lo riportano al villaggio e lo lasciano cadere nella casa della donna.

Passano i giorni, ma lui spera ancora in qualche aiuto. Scava nella sabbia trappole per i corvi, nella speranza di catturarne uno per attaccargli al collo un biglietto. Tre mesi dopo prega gli abitanti del villaggio di concedergli un’ora al giorno per andare a vedere il mare. Gli rispondono che avrebbero preso in considerazione la sua richiesta.

La donna intreccia collane di perline. E` un altro lavoro fastidioso, ma la donna pensa di poter vendere le collane e con il ricavato comprare una radio per l’uomo. Lui si arrabbia, prende le collane e le getta per terra. Ma poi l’aiuta a raccoglierle. Brucia anche i suoi insetti per darle una nuova scatola per le sue collane. Lei gli dice di aver paura di restare di nuovo da sola. Gli abitanti del villaggio discutono la richiesta dell’uomo e decidono che esaudiranno il suo desiderio solo se fara` l’amore con la donna davanti a loro. Nel cuore della notte si accalcano sul bordo del muro, mascherati e ubriachi, facendo luce sulla coppia. La donna li ignora e continua a spalare la sabbia. Lui esita per un po’ poi cerca di violentarla. Lei cerca di lottare e gli urla che e` un pazzo, fino a quando lui desiste e la gente si allontana.

Un giorno, mentre controlla le sue trappole per i corvi, l’uomo si accorge che sono piene d’acqua: per caso aveva scoperto un nuovo modo per portare l’acqua alle case. Non lo dice alla donna, ma cerca di perfezionare la sua scoperta. La donna e` ora preoccupata da un’altra cosa, e lui lo scoprira` il giorno seguente: e` rimasta incinta e c’e` qualcosa che non va nella gravidanza. Gli abitanti del villaggio la assistono, e decidono di portarla da un dottore. Lui viene lasciato da solo, ed ha quindi una buona occasione per fuggire. Si arrampica sul muro, e va verso il mare. Ma poi semplicemente torna indietro. E` ora piu` interessato alla sua scoperta piuttosto che a tornare a Tokyo.
