has been writing about popular, avantgarde and classical music for about 30 years, since he was a teenager. His most recent books on music are: "A History Of Rock Music 1951-2000" (2003), "A History Of Popular Music before Rock Music (2007), "A History Of Jazz Music 1900-2000 (2007). Piero was a pioneer of Internet journalism, creating an online database and an electronic magazine as far back as 1983. These eventually evolved into his website www.scaruffi.com, possibly the first website to be named after a music scholar. This website is now one of the oldest, largest and most visited websites on popular and avantgarde music. In october 2006 the New York Times titled an interview with piero "the greatest website of all times".
Piero's background is in Mathematics and Physics, although his main source of income has always been Computer Science. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard (1984) and Stanford (1995-96), conducting research on Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence. Since 1999, he has been teaching classes at U.C. Berkeley on History of Knowledge, Nature of Mind, etc, exploring the border between Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, Physics and Mathematics. Books that piero has published on these scientific topics include "Thinking About Thought" (2003) and "The Nature of Consciousness" (2006). During the 1980s, when he was still living in Italy, piero was awarded seven national poetry prizes. Several collections in English were published only on his website. His works have been translated into Italian, Chinese and Polish. He was on the board of directors of the art magazine "Leonardo" (MIT Press). An avid traveler who spends months on the road, piero has visited more than 100 countries of the world.
