The major big band of the hard-bop era was perhaps the one led by Los Angeles-based white Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson (1928), a former member of Stan Kenton's orchestra. His Birdland Dream Band (formed in 1956) sounded like a simplified and less bombastic version of Kenton's orchestra, with music composed and arranged by tenor saxophonist Bill Holman.
