Lucia Dlugoszewski, nata nel 1931 a Detroit, studio` pianoforte al Conservatorio (1940-1946) e poi con Edgar Varese (1950-53) a New York.
Her early compositions, such as
Moving Space Theater Piece (1949), scored for "everyday sounds",
and Orchestra Structure For The Poetry Of Everyday Sounds (1952),
were in the tradition of Pierre SChaeffer's "acousmatic" music, as was the
soundtrack for the film Variations On Noguchi (1953).
Ispirata dalla celebre piece cacofonica Ionisation di Edgar Varese,
Dlugoszewski costrui` piu` di cento strumenti a percussione e compose
musica per essi come
Suchness Concerto (1958),
Openings Of The Eye (1958),
Delicate Accidents In Space (1959), for quintet of rattling instruments,
Eight Clear Places (1961),
e Geography Of Noon (1964).
Un'altra delle sue invenzioni (1951) e' il
"timbre piano", un pianoforte suonato sulle corde con archetto e plettro,
esattamente come se si trattasse di un violino o una chitarra;
an instrument similar in concept to Cage's prepared piano that she employed in
Desire Caught By The Tail (1952), for voice and timbre piano,
in the dance piece Here And Now With Watchers (1954), and in
Archaic Aggregates (1961), for self-built percussions and timbre piano.

quintetto di fiati Angels Of Inmost Heaven
e al celebre assolo di tromba di Space Is Diamond (1970).
Dlugoszewski also scored the soundtrack for Jonas Mekas' film Guns Of The Trees (1962).
Abyss And Caress (diretta nel 1975 da Boulez con la New York Philarmonic
e la tromba solista di Gerard Schwarz) e Tender Theatre Flight Nageire (1978), un dialogo circolare fra sestetto di ottoni e percussioni non
accordate (brass sextet and non-pitched percussion), furono
le sue composizioni piu` ambiziose.
