Articles on Afghanistan before 2007

  • (july 2007) The war on Western civilization. The moment the Afghani government claims success in a field, that becomes the new target of the Islamic terrorists. Recently, the Islamic terrorists have targeted the most visible sign of change in Afghanistan: women. Women are represented in the Afghani government and parliament in a percentage unheard of in any Islamic country. The Afghani government has opened countless schools for girls. Sure, the girls are still segregated, but at least they get an education so they have more than one option (being her husband's slave) in life. Unfortunately, the simple fact of educating a girl is a crime in the eyes of the Islamic terrorists. First they targeted the government, then they targeted the families, and now they target the girls themselves. Six girls were shot in Logar province by "Islamic terrorists", who were not necessarily members of the Taliban or Al Qaeda (anybody who believes in the letter of the Quran is an "Islamic terrorist", i.e. someone willing to fight in the name of the sentences written in that book, since that book theoretically comes from Allah, who theoretically is the only god, and, apparently, a very evil one).
The West could certainly provide more help to protect women and families in Afghanistan. But we often miss the point: any success in "westernizing" an Islamic country will automatically become the target of the Islamic terrorists. What they fight against is precisely the westernization of their world. The moment we build a highway or a hospital or a school, that becomes an obvious target. The moment we facilitate a democratic election, the democratically elected members of parliament become targets. The moment we give women jobs they become targets.
These are Western values, not Islamic values. There never were schools for girls in the core Islamic world. There never were democratic elections in the core Islamic world (outside of the Indian peninsula and Turkey).
The Muslim masses must eventually stop denying the facts and face them. Either they want Western-style values, or not. If not, let Islam rule. If yes, then fight Islam wherever you can. The problem today is that the Muslim masses still haven't decided what they really want. They have centuries of religious brainwashing (not to mention the example of their own "prophet", Mohammed) that tells them that fighting infidels is good, no matter what the infidels are trying to say. On the other hand, millions of them (more or less secretely) desire the quality of life that westerners have enjoyed for a long time. In fact, millions of them migrate to Europe and to the USA. But then they all seem to march and riot in the streets like stone-age barbarians when a small Danish newspaper publishes some cartoons that offend the founder of Islam and first Islamic terrorist (by his own words, he aimed at inspiring "terror" in the hearts of the infidels).
    Make up your minds.

  • (may 2007) The USA doesn't get it. In april 2007 the USA military announced with great fanfare that it had killed 136 Taliban fighters. These used to be the Rumsfeld-era announcements, that inevitably turned out to be the exact opposite of what Rumsfeld claimed (no Taliban killed, just innocent civilians). Sure enough, an investigation has now revealed that the USA bombed a village and killed at least 42 civilians, including women and children (workers were still digging bodies out of the rubble as of the third of may). Obviously, the old failed Rumsfeld propaganda is still popular among the USA officials in Afghanistan and Iraq.
This not only further undermines the credibility of the USA (which is already very low throughout the world) but it also undermines the Karzai government, that used to be the most popular of any country in Asia. Karzai is now seen by many Afghans as powerless to rein in either the Taliban (who are learning from Iraq and staging more and more suicide bombings) or the USA (that keeps bombing villages by mistakes, causing much more terror than the Taliban, because a USA jet striker in the sky is far more terrifying than a Taliban fighter armed with an old gun).
