Jimmy Webb was an odd blend of extremes, emotional like
Leonard Cohen and trivial like Burt Bacharach. Since he was a kid,
other pop artists turned his songs into hits:
By The Time I Get To Phoenix (1966),
Requiem 820 Latham (1967),
Up Up And Away (1967),
Wichita Lineman (1968),
Galveston (1969),
Where's the Playground Susie (1969),
Met Her On A Plane (1971),
Highwayman (1977),
Watermark (1978).
He saved his ambitions for
Richard Harris' albums A Tramp Shining (1967), with
MacArthur Park, a suite for rock band, orchestra and choir,
and The Yard Went on Forever (1969), both composed and arranged by
Webb, as well as for his own debut album Words And Music (1970).
He also scored
Abraham Polonsky's film Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here.
