Cockney Rebel were the vehicle for melodramatic vocalist Steve Harley. They started out with Human Menagerie (1973) as a progressive-rock outfit that mixed acoustic guitars, classical violin and electric piano, and that boasted a blue-collar, working-class and rather vulgar posture. The gay anthem Sebastian and the gripping Death Trip (not to mention the singles Judy Teen and Mr Soft) displayed traces of glam-rock.

Adopting a harder sound, Psychomodo (1974) improved over that idea and delivered at least two minor classics: the ballad Make Me Smile (reminiscent of Bob Dylan's Absolutely Sweet Marie) and the singalong Tumbling Down.
