Rap crossed genders with the advent of a viable generation of female rappers, a phenomenon pioneered by
MC Lyte (Lana Moorer).
Lyte As a Rock (1988), recorded when she was only 17, and especially
the very commercial
Eyes on This (1989), with Cha Cha Cha,
gave her the same credibility as male rappers.
She moved towards soul-rap on Act Like You Know (1991),
Ain't No Other (1993), with Ruffneck,
Bad As I Wanna B (1996) and Seven & Seven (1998).
