I piu' banali imitatori degli REM sono i Miracle Legion (stanziati in
Connecticut), la cui Backyard (Incas, 1984) e' una fedele copia
del modello originale.
Closer To The Wall, sullo stesso EP, e` altrettanto armoniosa.
I dischi successivi sono risultati progressivamente meno
interessanti.
Surprise Surprise Surprise (Rough Trade, 1987)
Il mini-album Glad (Rough Trade, 1988) e` per lo piu` registrato dal vivo.
Su Me And Mr Ray (Rough Trade, 1989) la formazione si e` ridotta
a un duo, il cantante Mark Mulcahy e il chitarrista Ray Neal, e il
sound, dopo un bagno di umilta', si e' assestato su un folkrock dimesso, da
cantautors degli anni Sessanta.

The brand of pop on Drenched (Morgan Creek, 1991) is too generic
to stick more than three minutes.
After a four-year hiatus,
Portrait Of A Damaged Family (Mezzotint, 1996)
runs the gamut of melodic rock, from Motown soul to Merseybeat, from bubblegum
(I Wish I Was Danny Kaye) to folk-rock (Madison Park).
You're My Blessing is a Pet Sounds-styled baroque madrigal, and
La Muerte Di Gardenier flirts with jazz and funk.
It could well be their most accomplished record ever, certainly the most
versatile and creative.
Miracle Legion's vocalist Mark Mulcahy probably gave the best he had in
himself on the solo albums Fathering (Mezzotint, 1998) and
Smile Sunset (Mezzotint, 2001), that present a completely different
artist, an assured, mature, pensive bard and a master of mood crafting.
