Audra is the project of brothers Bret and Bart Helm, originally from
Chicago but now residing in Mesa, Arizona.
In a Dark Room (1998) introduced the band with the somber requiem
In Hollywood Tonight and the elegant madrigal You're So Pretty.
The EP
Silver Music (1999) gave them an underground hit,
In All Our Androgyny, that sets David Bowie's wails to a Joy Division
dance beat. Their style is indeed anchored to
glam-rock, as Spiked with Black and Rum proves, but
a decadent stately ballad like Flowers
and the lengthy, slow, distorted raga of 2 Girls in 1 Dress,
not to mention the Doors rip-off of Venus, present a much more mature
band.
Audra (Projekt, 2000) collects the best of the two albums.
Their half-baked synth-pop is redeemed by an excursion in
Sisters Of Mercy land like
What Your Eyes Have Seen.
