Bill Ding is a band from Chicago that plays progressive, brainy, nonlinear
electronic and industrial sounds with vibraphones, cellos, violins, and horns
kind of rock, not unlike Tortoise.
Without that band's focus and talent, Bill Ding's
And The Sound of Adventure (Hefty, 1996) is clever but also pretentious,
and only occasionally challenging.
Vibes, cello, violin, horns are mixed in to further confuse the listener.
The technique is almost dub.
John Hughes is the arranger.
Quirkiness and angst peak on
Trust In God But Tie Up Your Camel (Hefty, 1997), featuring a quartet of
trumpet, clarinet, cello and vibraphone (besides the arranger). Songs like
Goddam Your Thing and Waterway Systems are certainly
adventurous and futuristic.
Slicker is the alter ego of Bill Ding's John Hughes (son of the director),
who is also the head of Hefty Records.
Ryan Rapsys of Euphone helps him out on
Confidence In Duber (Hefty, 1998), an experiment in using found noises
to create rhythm.
The Latest (Hefty, 2001)
is a futuristic collage of machine-based instrumental styles.
