Slim Dunlap, last guitarist of the
Replacements, was considered little more
than background filling for
Paul Westerberg's voice.
His debut The Old New Me (Medium Cool, 1993) was a honest record of
white rhythm and blues, with a good dose of catchy melodies and Keith Richards
riffs.
Times Like This (Medium Cool, 1996) is a decent blues-rock album,
but a little uninspired, coming through as a mixture of
Rolling Stones (Cozy) and Lou Reed (Radio Hook Word Hit)
with avant-funk-blues ambitions (Jungle Out There),
while Little Shiva's Song dusts off the glory of the Replacements
and the
title-track grants him a second career as a writer of bittersweet ballads.
