Frank London's
Klezmatics play traditional klezmer music with a folk, rock and jazz
twist. The tempos, the instrumentation and the melodies are warped by
a fertile imagination.
Their albums contain mainly traditionals but sometimes also originals.
Frank London plays trumpet, cornet, alto horn, piano, organ.
The line-up comprised Matt Darriau on saxophone,
David Licht on drums (a former Shockabilly) and Alicia Svigals on violin.
Their albums are:
Shvaygn = Toyt/ Silence = Death,
Rhythm & Jews (Flying Fish, 1993),
Jews With Horns (Xenophile, 1995),
Possessed Z (Xenophile, 1997) and
The Well (Xenophile, 1998).
Saxophonist Matt Darriau is also the leader of the similarly klezmer-eclectic
Paradox Trio, that also interprets Slavic, Turkish and Greek music from a jazz
and rock perspective. Their albums are:
Paradox Trio (Knitting Factory, 1995),
Flying At A Slant (Knitting Factory, 1997), which includes
Phase and Faux Clarinet, and
Source (Knitting Factory, 1999), which includes
Ghost Dance Turkic, Oriental Suite.
The Well (Rounder, 1998) is a collaboration with Israeli singer
Chava Albertstein.
