Alan Sutherland, who goes by the monicker Land Of The Loops, is a
Boston keyboardist who, inspired by avantgarde ensemble Negativland,
composes eccentric collages of samples. By juxtaposing dance beats, ethereal
vocals and cartoonish harmonies,
Bundle Of Joy (Up, 1996 - Subpop, 1997)
is a novelty record for the sci-fi generation.
If it never quite achieves the grace of
Vampire Rodents,
the album's best tricks (like I Dream In Stereo) stand as a testament
to how modern musicians can create great music without actually playing it.
The album was followed by the EP Refried Treats (Up, 1997), that
reworks some of the tracks.
Vocalists Heather Lewis (of Beat Happening), Takako Minekawa (a Cornelius
collaborator), Jovita Carpenter (aka Lady Mallard of Volume All
Star) and DJ Trouble guest on
Puttering About A Small Hand (Up, 2000), but the album is an
inferior copy of the debut. The same praxis (bass and beats,
ethereal puzzles of voices, layers of electronically processed sounds)
yields far less engaging results, whether another take on dream-pop
(Knee Deep in Packasandra, How to Feed a Sea Monkey) or on
Laurie Anderson
(Slumber Party, Automotive High School, Marshmellow
Pillows) or on dub (Drive Safely, the lengthy
Party Pooper).
