Lorelei is a band from Arlington (Virginia) that plays anarchic, layered, chameleon songs each spanning a broad range of musical ideas, each traversing a wide soundscape. The method is borrowed from Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and Bark Psychosis, but may also owe more than a passing inspiration to the local school of progressive-rock (Rake, Boud Deun).
The tracks on the EP Asleep (Slumberland, 1994), Mostly I Sleep, The Sky Is Falling, caterwaul and Stale Houses, are micro-suites that continuously revisit their own melodic core.

A more sophisticated production makes Everyone Must Touch The Stove (Slumberland, 1996) a merry-go-round of styles. Not everything shines, but the fuzzed-out lullaby Thigh For A Leg, that turns into a hard-rocking maelstrom (Jesus And Mary Chain meets Hawkwind), and particularly the industrial dub of Inside The Crimelab climb new peaks of creativity.
Most puzzling and intriguing are the frequent nods to Brazilian pop music, ranging from the noisy samba-reggae Today's Shrug to the loud distortion, atonal strumming and frenzy rhythm of Throwaway. Quiet Staid Debt opens like a drunk bossanova, unleashes a Velvet Underground-ish progression and explodes in a cosmic cacophony.
The last three tracks sound like they belong to another album. The 8-minute Newsprint starts off as an acrobatic rock and roll that harks back to early punk-rock (Generation X), but then fades into a surreal space-rock jam. The subsequent tracks elaborate: Stop What You Are Doing focuses on the punk-rock and Pillar is just the quintessential space-rock jam.
Lorelei comes through as a band that is trying very hard to sound terribly original, sometimes are the expense of sounding sincere.

Lorelei's guitarist Matthew Dingee formed the instrumental trio LU and recorded LU (Pulcel, 2001), at the border between post-rock, funk-punk and new wave.
