Kami Lyle is a singer-songwriter and trumpet player
(real name Kimberly Howg), born in Minnesota and raised on classical and jazz
music, who moved to Nashville in 1992
after graduating from the Berklee College of Music.
Blue Cinderella (MCA, 1997) is a collection of mostly piano-based
confessional ballads sung in a
Suzanne Vega tone
and arranged by a combo of seasoned session-men.
The country-jazz style of Polka Dots, Blue Cinderella,
Mr Moon is intriguing, but the songs lack a melodic center strong
enough to support the story.
More subdued compositions like Worried One possess a unique sense of
depth and feeling.
Rickie Lee Jones is a strong influence on smoky songs like
Boys and Midnight Club.
Lyle has to rely mainly on the music, that is superbly played but hardly
creative.
