New York-based pop-jazzatronica combo M'lumbo
formed in 1984 and began performing
covers of tv soundtracks.
They progressively expanded into world-funk-jazz with their first three
cassettes: Relaxin' With (1989),
Plays for Young Lovers (1989),
Plays For God (1990), summarized on the
anthology Life After Death (1991).
The Book Of Night Burning in a Garden of Ice (Korm Plastics, 1998)
increased the doses of atmospheric jazz, somewhat
reminiscent of the Lounge Lizards. The album perfected an art of composition
that blends live instrumentation and samples, while avoiding the abstract
collage.
They pared down to a trio
(Ron Boggs, Rob Ray, Kurt Johannes Leege) for
Spinning Tourists in a City of Ghosts (Unit Circle, 1999), credited to
M'Lumbo vs Kobalt 6, a work that bridges free-jazz, dissonant avantgarde and
dance music.
For five minutes Science Headquarters sounds like a random sampling of videogame soundtracks, before the synthesizers and the drum-machines create
the order of syncopated techno music. The horns add a jazz feeling, and
polyrhythms add an ethnic feeling before the track ends at 11 minutes.
Metamorphosis and regeneration remain the underlying themes of the other tracks.
The Soul Exchange, another eleven-minute piece, is seven minutes of
chaotic collage before a brief Afro-funk orgy.
The Secret Of Fear is deconstructed in the same cubist way, but adds a
cinematic quality to the jungle of disjointed noises. After an interlude of
Karlheinz Stockhausen-like dissonant electronics, the 13-minute track mutates
into a pounding fanfare a` la Fleetwood Mac's Tusk.
Things get even looser in Call This Number Now, a pure abstraction of
exotic instruments and exotic sounds.
The montage technique reaches its zenith of sophistication in
Sprawling Mausoleums, a eleven-minute track that changes personality
several times while always maintaining a dense texture.
M'lumbo quotes famous pieces of music throughout the album, but the quotations
are mere blips in the background radiation of alien sounds.
The Nine Billion Names Of (Multimood, 2001) was, instead, precisely
what their previous albums had carefully avoided: an abstract collage of
aimless soounds.
M'lumbo also made the film "System Noise".
Sacrifices To The Neon Gods (Mulatta, 2006) is a tribute to tv
soundtracks of the past.

tre cassette, Relaxin' With (1989),
Plays for Young Lovers (1989),
Plays For God (1990), riassunte nell'antologia Life After Death (1991).
The Book Of Night Burning in a Garden of Ice (Korm Plastics, 1998)
Spinning Tourists in a City of Ghosts (Unit Circle, 1999), accreditata a
Mac.
Il suono diventa ancor pi— slegato in Call This Number Now, una pura
I M'lumbo citano brani
