Rispolverando l'idea di fondere la foga dell'hip hop con quella dell'hardcore,
gli Orange 9mm debuttano nel 1995 con Driver Not Included (East West),
all'incrocio fra Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prong e Scatterbrain. Brani
movimentati come Glistening e Toilet fanno leva soprattutto su un attacco
da cardiopalmo e su uno slogan altisonante ripetuto strabuzzando gli occhi e
sprizzando sudore da tutti i pori. La loro musica e` urlata a squarciagola e
traforata da scudisciate heavymetal, scossa da sincopi sismiche e suonata a
tutto volume.
Le variazioni su questo schema sono dovute a un contenuto piu` rap
(High Speed Changer) o melodico (Suspect) o semplicemente a un fervore
piu` allucinato (Sacrifice).
Il quartetto e` capitanato dal cantante Chaka Malik, proveniente dal gruppo
hardcore dei Burn, un "urlatore" con le carte in regole, forte
del registro del David Thomas (Pere Ubu) piu` esagitato.
La chitarra tagliente e stravagante di Chris Traynor (ex Fountainhead) ne
e` l'ideale contrappunto, altrettanto prepotente e ostile.

Fire In The Whole and Take You Away are the standouts of
Tragic (Atlantic, 1996), a more conventional effort, and
Pretend I'm Human (NG, 1999) adds sampling to the band's weapons,
but without meaningful results.
