Poem Rocket is a New York band led by vocalists
Mike Peters and Sandra Gardner who intone twisted melodies over dissonant
structures inspired to
Sonic Youth's guitar noise.
Their experiments with the song format took off with a series of
adventurous singles, in particular
Period/ Flaw (Bear, 1995) and
Small White Animal (PCP, 1995),
collected on Felix Culpa (PCP, 1996)
The album
Infinite Retry On Parallel Time-Out (PCP, 1997)
and the single
Desire Illuminated/ Electronimo (Magic Eye, 1998)
showcase
challenging
songs that are aural puzzles soaked in the history of rock music.
The EP The Universe Explained In Six Songs (Magic Eye, 1998) is more
accomplished than the album. Compositions like
New White Spaceship and God Damn Alien Sundial, not to mention
the 12-minute Levy 9RSVP, display a fantastic mastery of rock harmony
while denying the entire process of rock harmony.
Psychogeography (Atavistic, 2000) is
another powerful essay of rock that tightly couples trance and dissonance
(Karel Appel,
Zen Hum, Explosion Ex Cathedra, Dirigible) in a way
that transpires grief.
Peters and Gardner's vocal harmonies
somehow give meaning to Peters' guitar noise.
The double-CD Invasion (2007) is an ambitious summa of their art.
