I perni attorno a cui ruotano le fanfare (prevalentemente) strumentali di
Walking A Full Moon Dog (Cuneiform, 1996), primo disco dei
Rattlemouth, sono Danny Finney al sassofono e Rebby Sharp alla chitarra.
Richmond fu teatro di una delle esperienze piu` interessanti del
progressive-rock americano, quella degli
Orthotonics. Il gruppo si sciolse
senza aver mai ottenuto il successo che meritava, nonostante due prove
brillanti come Wake Up You Must Remember (Generic) e Luminous Bipeds (Rift).
Sia Finney sia Sharp facevano parte dell'ultima formazione.
Prima ancora Finney aveva fatto parte degli Idiot Savant, ensemble ancor piu`
sperimentale e titolare del leggendario Shakers In A Tantrum Landscape
(Artifacts). Con pezzi come Bread Based Economy e Frommage De Tete i
Rattlemouth riprendono la missione che fu degli Orthotonics, quella di divulgare
il jazz-rock clownesco di Zappa e Henry Cow, tutt'al piu` conferendo maggior
prominenza alla ritmica. Brani sincopati come Windshield Viper lasciano
intravedere anche una passione per il funk nevrotico dei Contortions.
E le due composizioni piu` lunghe, Bad Data e Hummalong Combustion,
inglobano anche un elemento didascalico alla Art Bears.

When that ensemble called it quits, after recording Wake Up You Must Remember
(Generic) and Luminous Bipeds (Rift), saxophonist Danny Finney and guitarist
Rebby Sharp started new projects that eventually led to Rattlemouth.
On Walking A Full Moon Dog (Cuneiform, 1996)
the new band actually resembles the old one more than in one way.
Zappa's clownesque anti-jazz and Henry Cow's intellectual brand of Canterbury's
anti-rock are still their main inspirations, even if Bad Data and
Hummalong Combustion, the longest tracks, are coldly didascalic a' la Art
Bears. Rattlemouth are talented enough to reach new heights in the progressive
genre.
