Red Star Belgrade is the project
(named after one of the greatest European football teams)
of North Carolina-based
guitarist/singer/songwriter Bill Curry (the rest of the band is basically
his wife Graham Harris).
The debut EP, Lose Your Temper (Mouthful, 1995), and
the 1995 singles Union SC and I Hate People
displayed a weird personality intent in analyzing the most
morbid aspects of the daily news and in venting as much anger as possible to
society.
Curry's bleak, even brutal, view of life is in full display on the first
full-length,
Where The Sun Doesn't Shine (Mouthful, 1996), highlighted by
bitter Neil Young-ian rants such as
Mercy, Saddest Girl and
Under My Wheels.
Equally frightening is the intensity of
First Night, the standout track on
Fractured Hymnal (Checkered Past, 1999).
Turning his attention to global sociopolitical issues, Curry
adorned Telescope (Checkered Past, 2000) with
Nixon Stomp, After The Revolution and The Border,
all delivered in the grave tone of a messenger of the apocalypse.
