The Swales are an electro-acoustic combo from New Jersey, led by
singer and guitarist Bob Carr, that plays sensitive folk-pop and country-rock
on two early cassettes,
Heartbroke & Bummin' (Sonic Delights, 1990) and
Moya Krova (Sonic Delights, 1991).
The album Pleasureland (Bar None, 1993) reworks some of the early songs
in a more aggressive style (On Your Side), although the
melodic trance of When I Dream remains their forte.
The band dissolved soon afterwards and Carr recruited a new line-up for
What's His Name (Bar None, 1995). Unfortunately, the new Swales play
mildly humorous country-rock (Tanqueray Tango) and southern boogie
(Night Life), a mostly light and superficial take on Americana.
