Awkwardness (Young God, 2001) is a remix album.
Earnest Powers + (Emperor Jones, 2002) collects singles and unreleased
tracks (the angelic tinning of WFMU, the hypnotic strumming and
drumming of Earnest Powers, the upbeat quasi-melody of E Song,
the industrial polyrhythmic Neu-ian piece Fangface,
The Emotional Rescue LP (Aesthetics, 2002),
their most radio-friendly work yet, marks a shift towards the song
format and the traditional folk-rock format in particular.
A few ballads (Now I Know The Sea, Awkwardness,
Indonesian Guitars, Mythologies) have an ethereal/tender quality
not too different from Mazzy Star.
Jason McNeely, Edward Robert (Paul Newman) and Christian Goyer launched the
project
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness (Emperor Jones, 2003) with
a self-titled EP that includes
the funky-soul number We're Still The Weaker Sex,
the disco-punk of When You Go Out,
the lugubrious and solemn I Want to Die in the Hot Sun,
all reminiscent of the (old) new wave
(Talking Heads,
Blondie,
Joy Division).
The lengthy The Melody of a Fallen Tree on
We Fight Til Death (Secretly Canadian, 2004) hints at the band joining
the "revivalist" bandwagon of Interpol and
the likes.
The pieces on Giving Up The Ghost (Secretly Canadian, 2005) are rather
shallow, making one think that the purpose of the album was to deliver the
synth-pop tune Praise and the rest of it is merely filler,
the instrumentals Dirge For A Pack Of Lies and The Front
being the notable exceptions.

Alcune ballate (Now I Know The Sea, Awkwardness, Indonesian Guitars, Mythologies) si distinguono per etericità e delicatezza non dissimili dai Mazzy Star.
Jason McNeely, Edward Robert (Paul Newman) e Christian Goyer hanno poi dato vita al progetto I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness (Emperor Jones, 2003) con un album omonimo che include l'episodio funky-soul di We're Still The Weaker Sex, ll disco-punk di When You Go Out e la funerea I Want to Die in the Hot Sun, tutte reminiscenti della vecchia new wave (Talking Heads, Blondie, Joy Division). La lunga The Melody of a Fallen Tree, inclusa in We Fight Til Death (Secretly Canadian, 2004), consegna il gruppo alla pletora di nostalgici, in compagnia di Interpol et similia.
I brani di Giving Up The Ghost (Secretly Canadian, 2005) sembrano piuttosto superficiali, ed inducono a pensare che il solo scopo dell'album tutto fosse solo di vendere il synth-pop di Praise. Il resto del disco è costituito da semplici riempitivi, uniche interessati eccezioni le strumentali Dirge For A Pack Of Lies e The Front.
