Heidi Berry is a folksinger (born in Boston but raised in England), whose
EP Firefly (Creation, 1987), arranged by the
Weather Prophets's Peter Astor, the
Felt's keyboardist Martin Duffy and others,
contains discreet, fragile, celtin-tinged, folk tunes
(Firefly, House Made Of Wood).
The songs on Below The Waves (Creation, 1989) sound like mini-chamber
pieces for cello, viola and piano, and her ghostly voice drifts over them
weightless (Ribbons, Northshore Train).
Synthesizers accent the sublime atmospheres of Love (4AD, 1991),
arranged by (among others)
Levitation's Terry Bickers
and Weather Prophets's Peter Astor
(Gloria, Wake).
But the pompous sound of Heidi Berry (4AD, 1993) has completely
lost the magic of her early folk tunes.
The line-up now includes also
Kitchens Of Distinction's Julian Swales.
Mercury and The Moon And The Sun are catchy and elegant, but
ultimately Berry sounds like a poor man's
Jane Siberry.
Miracle (4AD, 1996) builds on that format: long, soft, sophisticated,
hybrids of celtic music and rock music
(The Moutain). Violinist Anne Wood often steals the show.
