The Coldcut duo also started another project, called DJ Food, with help from a collective of DJ's. The album A Recipe For Disaster (Ninja Tune, 1995) is a milestone of experimental hip hop. Austere compositions such as Scientific Youth and Dark River hardly belong to dance music. The Dusk, Inosan, Mr Quickie Cuts The Cheese are pieces of a frenzied collage of loops of hip-hop beats, dub bass lines, jazzy riffs, electronic effects and rap scratching. Fungle Junk, Bass City Roller and Akaire testify of a terrible metamorphosis underway.

Patrick Carpenter and "Strictly Kev" are the only DJ Food survivors on Refried Food (Ninja Tune, 1996), that collects remix singles.

The mood pieces of Kaleidoscope (Ninja Tune, 2000) further extend the intuitions of A Recipe For Disaster (Ninja Tune, 1995). Break and Nocturne are the hip hop equivalent of classical music. Cookin' toys with Miles Davis' jazz. The Sky At Night is almost symphonic. Minitoka is a new age lullaby. The album is more closely related to movie soundtracks than to dancefloors.

Recorded during the same sessions, the EP Quadraplex (Ninja Tune, 2000), a four-movement suite, is far more experimental, using glass as the main instrument and minimalism as the main technique.

Solid Street Presents: Now Listen (Ninja Tune, 2001) is a remix of DJ Food's and Darren Knot's favorite music, for what it's worth.

The Search Engine (2012) was ostensibly his most ambitious album (a sort of futurist concept) but also his most traditional in structure, with the beats in the background and the vocals in the foreground. Both the depressing lyrics and the even more depressing deliveries of Matt Johnson (The The) and Jim Thirlwell (Foetus) turned it into a singer-songwriter tour de force.
