The English band Fretblanket were a little sensations because their debut album,
Junkfuel (Polydor, 1994), was released when the band's members were still
teenagers. Even more amazing was the fact that the album was ridiculously
derivative, devoid of any artistic value.
Vocalist/guitarist Will Copley (a clone of Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner)
and guitarist Clive Powell
(a follower of Husker Du's Bob Mould)
were quite simply beginners.
The early singles,
Better Than Swimming, Curtainsville and Twisted,
better represent their take at punk-pop.
Home Truths From Abroad (Polydor, 1997) is even worse:
the passionate single Into The Ocean,
the cello-based power ballad Accident En Route,
the acoustic Killer In A Former Life,
the Merseybeat refrain of Green As Green
are simply embarassing.
The hard-rocking progression of Supercool and Abandon Ship
hint that the band may be capable of more substantive stuff, but, ultimately,
this is an album of filler.
