James Hardway (real name David Harrow) is a veteran of the British music scene
who in the 1990s, with the
singles Cool Jazz Motherfucker (Recordings Of Substance, 1996) and
Bastard Son Of Swing (Recordings Of Substance, 1996),
and the album
Deeper Wider Smoother Shit (Recordings Of Substance, 1996),
launched the ambitious plan to web drum'n'bass and jazz.
Unfortunately, the result is often pretentious if not tedious.
The EP Illustrated Man (Recordings Of Substance, 1997) is basically
a trio of electronica, bass and flute.
But The Neon Lounge (Recordings Of Substance, 1997) is just cocktail
lounge music with a splash of polyrhythms and his quartet is an intriguing
proposition that just doesn't have good scores to play.
Easy Is A Four Letter Word (Shadow, 1998) is an anthology.
A Positive Sweat (Recordings Of Substance, 1999) contains the single
Grow and displays the musician's talent for jazz arrangements in
Livin' The Life.
Moors And Christians (Recordings of Substance, 2000)
is an embarassing take on Cuban music.
