The duo of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, hailing from Bristol (England), pioneered
trip-hop but never lived up to their fame.
While their creative outlet was minimal
(Smith & Mighty only released the remix of a
Mark Stewart song and two Burt Bacharach
covers), their production work launched
Massive Attack and the entire movement.
Smith & Mighty's first album came late and it was mediocre at best:
Bass Is Maternal (More Rockers, 1995).
Big World Small World (Studio K7, 2000) features Peter Rose
and a handful of guest vocalists (notably Tammy Payne). The trio delivers
the usual stew of funky keyboards, pop strings, breathless breakbeats, heavy
dub grooves, big-beat breaks, etc and a couple of sunny melodies
(The Way We Feel, Year 2000) but mostly this is
easy-listening a` la mode.
Life Is (K7, 2002) confirms that they are much more important as
promoters of ideas than as artists.
Retrospective (K7, 2004) is an anthology.
