65Daysofstatic, a British instrumental post-rock outfit led by
guitarists Joe Shrewsbury and Paul Wolinski, coined a sound for
guitar, piano, noise and drum-machine that seamlessly blends
Brit-pop, hard-rock and drum'n'bass.
The Fall Of Math (Monotreme, 2004) was derived from both
elements of Mogwai and Squarepusher. Retreat Retreat was a single.
The sonic attack of One Time For All Time (Monotreme, 2005) was
simultaneously more intense and elegant, more "digital" and more visceral,
thanks to the addition of Paul Wolinski's keyboards.
The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007) had an even stronger digital feel
but fell short on creative ideas.
We Were Exploding Anyway (2010) reduced the jarring tones and increased
the doses of electronica, yielding the crisp and streamlined
Mountainheads as well as the eight-minute "song"
Come To Me (with the Cure's Robert Smith on vocals).
The epileptic Dance Dance Dance is more in line with the Field's
reputation for disorienting soundscapes, a reputation that gets enhanced by
enigmatic compositions like
the lengthy Tiger Girl, Crash Tactic, Piano Fights and Weak4.
The EP Heavy Sky (2010) was a corollary to the album.
Silent Running (2011) was a far less ambitious work, with the
exception of Space Montage.
Paul Wolinski also released Labyrinths (2011) in a more traditional
techno and synth-pop vein.
