Chestnut Station is the project of Rian Murphy, a veteran of the
Chicago rock scene
and co-author of Will Oldham's All Most Heaven (Drag City, 2000),
who has assembled a supergroup including Rick Rizzo of
Eleventh Dream Day on guitar,
Mark Greenberg on keyboards, and occasional horns.
Murphy started out in the late 1980s as the drummer in Mantis, a band inspired
by British pub-rock, and launched Chestnut Station with
the EP Chestnut Station (Drag City, 1998).
In Your Living Room (Drag City, 2001), the first full-length album,
is entirely devoted to old-fashioned party music, mainly
upbeat, driving rhythm and blues with horns and choirs,
but also Band-style funky gospels and Stay-style slow swings.
The rendition of covers is impeccable, but also a little pointless.
