Los Angeles' ensemble Crystal Antlers,
fronted by shouter Jonny Bell and featuring
Victor Rodriguez on Farfisa organ,
debuted with
the singles
Parting Song For The Torn Sky / Parchman Farm (2006) and
Until The Sun Dies (Part 2) / Swamp Song (2007), followed by the
EP Crystal Antlers (2008). The EP (that reprises the A-sides of the
two singles) was one of the most creative and vibrant releases of the era.
Until The Sun Dies (Part 2) creates a surprising balance between
manic pounding rock'n'roll and power-ballad.
Vexation, possibly the apex, is an
emphatic and rousing organ-driven anthem that evokes
Colosseum.
The circus-like atmosphere of the waltzing A Thousand Eyes sounds like a
psychotic version of the Doors
with a symphonic coda a` la Moody Blues.
The instrumental introduction of Owl is reminiscent of
early Pink Floyd but is followed by an
emphatic aria worthy of a Broadway musical.
The relentless Arcturus borders on heavy metal.
In the dense melodramatic free-form feedback jam of
Parting Song For The Torn Sky
guitarist Errol Davis
outdoes
Jimi Hendrix.
The whole is more than its parts. There is a concentrate of history of rock
music and there is a lot that was never in the history of rock music.
The full-length album Tentacles (Touch And Go, 2009)
concocts a variety of organ-driven noise-pop rave-ups.
The lineup was:
Jonny Bell on bass, guitarist Andrew King, drummer Kevin Stuart, organist Victor Rodriguez and percussionist Damian Edwards.
After Painless Sleep, an
instrumental overture of noisy minimalist repetition,
the demented gypsy dance of Dust leads to
Time Erased, a drunk version of the Doors' Break On Thru with fibrillating organ and rhythm'n'blues shouting.
The pathos is sustained through the waltzing soul ballad Andrew and the
anthemic garage bacchanal Tentacles.
The seven-minute Several Tongues returns to the minimalist pattern of
the overture and adds a psychedelic chant and an instrumental break of
free-jazz cacophony.
Unfortunately, the quality heads downhill in the second half of the album.
This should have been another (killer) EP.
Two-Way Mirror (2011), with new keyboardist Cora Foxx,
was an eclectic collection that spanned many
genres but failed to master any of them.

2)crea un sorprendente equilibrio

Vexation, possibilmente l’apice del disco, è un inno enfatico e trascinante

guidati dall’organo. Dopo Painless Sleep, un’ouverture strumentale di rumorose ripetizioni minimaliste, la
demente danza zingara di Dust conduce a Time Erased, una versione
ubriaca di Break On Thru dei Doors per organo fibrillante e
shouting da rhythm'n'blues. Il pathos è sostenuto attraverso il valzer della
ballata soul Andrew e l’inno
baccanale da garage Tentacles. Several Tongues, di sette minuti,
ritorna al pattern minimalista dell’ouverture e aggiunge un cantico
psichedelico e un break strumentale di free-jazz cacofonico. Sfortunatamente,
la qualità precipita nella seconda parte dell’album. Sarebbe potuto
essere un altro EP killer.
Two-Way Mirror (2011), con la nuova tastierista Cora Foxx, è una collezione eclettica di
