Vancouver-based duo Japandroids, i.e. guitarist Brian King and drummer
David Prowse, debuted with the noise-rock of
Post-Nothing (Polyvinyl, 2009).
An early highlight is the irregular drumming and guitar dissonance of Young Hearts Spark Fire,
but the thundering The Boys Are Leaving Town is more representative
of their compromise: catchy melodies shouted inside jarring structures.
Hence the effervescent Wet Hair and
the tribal and hysterical Hearts Sweats.
The instrumental beginning of Crazy/Forever packs brainy fury
for what is essentially a power ballad.
By the end the duo is so confident in its method to pen a song,
I Quit Girls, around a laughable melody and a monotonous riff.
The peak of impetus, though, comes with the "motorik" rhythm of
(a` la Neu) of Sovereignty,
the best anti-anthem of the year.
