Pittsburgh's duo Zombi
debuted with the 33-minute mini-album Zombi (2001), that was still all
electronic (synthesizers and drum-machine), and the EP
Twilight Sentinel (2003 - Wabana, 2007), that added live bass and drums.
The Zombi Anthology (VCO, 2005) compiles the early recordings.
They refined their
instrumental synthesizer-heavy Goblin-influenced horror prog-rock on
Cosmos (Relapse, 2004),
with the nine-minute Serpens,
the eleven-minute Gemini and
the 13-minute Taurus
and
Surface To Air (Hypertension, 2006),
with the nine-minute Legacy,
the seven-minute Surface To Air and
the 18-minute Night Rhythms.
the mediocre Spirit Animal (2009)
Zombi's keyboardist Stevie Moore debuted solo with the symphonic post-rock of The Henge (Relapse, 2007).
The EP Sapphire (Throne Of Blood, 2009) was inspired by disco-music of the 1970s.
Spirit Animal (Relapse, 2009) returned to their gothic prog-rock.
Majeure is the side project of Zombi's drummer A.E. Paterra.
His solo debut, Timespan (Temporary Residence Limited, 2009), was written and recorded over 18 months, and consists of three lengthy pieces that merge minamilism, drones, psychadelia, and disco.
The fibrillating arpeggios of The Dresden Codex, supported by demonic drumming, lay the foundation for an eerie break during which the synth intones a
wistful Vangelis-like melody before the final sequencer-driven rhythmic crescendo. It's mainly the break that is worth a listen.
The motorik explosion of Teleforce is much more powerful and this time
the pensive second half that interrupts it (reminiscent of thriller soundtracks from the 1960s) is not welcome.
The deep rumble and stormy rustle of Timespan jumpstarts
another galopping jam for sequencer and drumming
laced with melodic synth pattern.
All in all, the album sounds like a nostalgic tribute to the technology of
the 1970s, with ideas that are only partially implemented.
