Cooly G, the project of London-based black producer Merrisa Campbell, emerged with
the instrumental dubstep Narst (2009),
backed with the oneiric wailing of Love Dub.
Her vocals were not impressive (at all) but the way she multitracked them and
mixed them with the syncopated African percussion in
Up in My Head (2010) was original, as was the stuttering house shuffle
of Landscapes (2011).
Unfortunately, those are the highlights of
Playin' Me (2012),
which otherwise only attempts to make her sound
more palatable to the r&b audience.
This inevitably led to the
meandering downtempo ballads of
Wait 'til Night (2014).
