Kenneth Gaburo (USA, 1926) began experimenting in 1955 with the combination
of musique concrete and live instruments, documented in ten
Antiphonies (1958 to 1991).
He also employed graphic notations and software-produced random sounds.
He had studied with Goffredo Petrassi in Italy and dedicated the
String Quartet (1956) to him.
Five Works For Voices, Instruments, and Electronics (New World, 2002)
collects:
the String Quartet;
Mouth-Piece, a sextet for solo trumpet;
Antiphony III, (1962) for 16 voices and electronics;
Antiphony IV (1967) for voice, piccolo, bass trombone, double-bass & electronics;
and
The Flow of (u). (1974), which consists of one note sung by three singers for 23 minutes.
Lingua II (Pogus, 2008) for seven virtuoso speakers collects two of his politicized
works belonging to the series of "compositional linguistics":
Maledetto (1967) for seven speakers,
and
Antiphony VIII (1983) for percussion, voice and electronics.
Antiphony IX (1985) was scored for orchestra, children and tape
Enough! (1988), subtitled "not enough", was scored for 40 voices and percussion.
Gaburo died in 1993.
