San Francisco-based guitarist John Shiurba, possibly more famous as the
founder of Limited Sedition (1998), belongs to the digital generation of
improvisors/composers.
Leading a sextet, Shiurba vents his progressive-rock and free-jazz obsessions on
5x5 1.1=M (september 2002 - Limited Sedition, 2004). Each track begins with a relatively
simple theme, which then slowly deteriorates as the musicians improvise
and focus on their interaction rather than on Shiurba's composition.
The result is abstract soundpainting in the loose tradition of the
Art Ensemble of Chicago, particularly in the third movement (track four).
