Wayne Vitale, already the director of the Bay Area-based Gamelan Sekar Jaya ensemble (founded in 1979),
composed numerous works for gamelan in the style of Balinese kebyar.
Makrokosma Bali (2011), co-composed with Balinese master I Made Arnawa,
was a multimedia gamelan opera.
Mikrokosma (2017), inspired to Balinese cosmology, was
a collaboration with Brian Baumbusch, performed by the Lightbulb Ensemble.
The sophisticated counterpoint of Selunding
and the energetic discharge of Pomp set the boundaries for
a luminous journey through a lattice of discrete sounds.
