Hindi director Shyam Benegal (India, 1934) made Ankur/ Seeding (1974), which inaugurates his series of female portraits and his collaborations with both composer Vanraj Bhatia and cinematographer Govind Nihalani, Nishant/ Night's End (1975), Manthan/ The Churning (1976), the children's film Charandas Chor/ Charandas the Thief (1975), the biopic Bhumika/ The Role (1977), based on the autobiography of a scandalous actress of the 1940s, the patriotic epic Junoon/ The Obsession (1979), Kalyug (1981), the satirical musical Mandi/ Market Place (1983), based on Ghulam Abbas' story "Aanandi", set in a brothel, with erotic and mystical overtones, Trikal (1985), and his "Muslim women trilogy" consisting of Susman/ Essence (1987), Mammo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996) and Zubeidaa (2001), a lavish Bollywood musical melodrama about a Muslim woman of the 1950s who wants to become an actress.
