Delbert Mann (USA, 1920) directed Paddy Chayefsky's play Marty (1955), one of the masterpieces of realism. Mann then specialized in adaptations of theatrical plays: The Bachelor Party (1957) from Paddy Chayefsky again, Desire Under the Elms (1958) from Eugene O'Neill, Separate Tables (1958) from Terence Rattigan, Middle of the Night (1959) from Chayefsky, and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960) from William Inge.

His last films were mediocre: The Outsider (1961), That Touch of Mink (1962), A Gathering of Eagles (1963), Dear Heart (1964), Fitzwilly (1967), Kidnapped (1971), Night Crossing (1982). He fared better on television, for example with She Waits (1972).
