Harry And Tonto (1974) is a light comedy that follows the adventures of an old man (and his cat) on the cross-country trip of his life.

Reluctant 70-year old Harry, who lives with his cat Tonto in a Manhattan apartment, is (physically) forced to move out by the police because the building has to be demolished. His son's family takes him in, but the old man needs some privacy, so they dispatch him to his daughter in Chicago. Harry can't board the plane because the airport police wants to X-ray his car's case. So he takes a bus, but then he has to get off the bus because his cat needs to pee. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Harry buys a very old car. He meets a teenager runaway who is hitchhiking and she talks him into visiting his first love. The two drive in the countryside until they find the now old woman in a old-age house. She doesn't recognize him, but they dance together. Then Harry and the girl reach Harry's daughter, but Harry is unhappy even with her, so the two take off again, and Harry's crazy nephew joins them. Haflway to California, Harry decides to let the two go alone. Harry continues by hitchhiking (an old medicine man, a prostitute) until he reaches Las Vegas. He meets an old friend who is lonely and broke. And ends his trip on the beach playing with a child in the sand.
