Norman McLaren (1914), a British immigrant in Canada who had roots in both animation and documentary (having worked with Grierson), crafted abstract camera-less "cartoons" such as Boogie-Doodle (1940), set to the boogie-woogie music of pianist Albert Ammons, Hen Hop (1942), Begone Dull Care (1949), Now is the Time (1951), with toys with three-dimensional projection, Neighbours (1952), Blinkity Blank (1955), which is perhaps his most famous, Rythmetic (1956), Christmas Cracker (1963), Pas de Deux (1968), Synchromy (1971), Narcissus (1983), etc.
