Ukrainian-Russian director Pyotr Todorovsky started out as a cinematographer, for example in Marlen Khutsiev’s Vesna na Zarechnoi Ulitse/ Springtime on Zarechnaia Street and Dva Fedora/ The Two Fedors (1956).

Todorovsky started directing frequently melancholic films: Nikogda/ Never (1963), Vernost/ Loyalty (1964), Gorodskoi Romans/ Urban Romance (1970), V Den Prazdnika/ On the Holiday (1978), Liubimaia Zhenshchina Mekhanika Gavrilova/ Mechanic Gavrilov’s Beloved Woman (1981), Voenno-polevoy Roman/ Wartime Romance (1983), Po Glavnoi Ulitse s Orkestrom/ Along the Main Street with an Orchestra (1986), culminating with Interdevochka/ Intergirl (1989), about a Moscow prostitute.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, he made Ankor Escho Ankor/ Encore Once More Encore (1992) Takaia Chudnaia Igra/ Such a Wonderful Game (1995), and Retro Vtroem/ A Retro Threesome (1998), a remake of Abram Room’s silent movie Bed and Sofa.
